Frostbyte Media (Release Date – Out Now)
Eve To Dawn has been released to celebrate 30 years of Loudness. The Japanese rockers’ career peaked in the mid-eighties with the release of ‘Thunder In The East’ ,‘Lightning Strikes’ and a few high profile support slots but soon after they disappeared from view.
I was pleasantly surprised then to receive this, their latest release, that was until I actually listened to it though. Time has been less than kind to Loudness with a few comings and goings coupled with the untimely death of their drummer and this is an album that appears to reflect that turmoil.
Opening track ‘A Light In The Dark’ sets the tone with the band sounding like a third rate thrash act, not the melodic heavy rockers of old. Vocalist Minoru Niihara sounds a shadow of his former self, screeching along for all he is worth whilst band founder, guitarist Akira Takasaki, usually a six string virtuoso, just sounds confused. As well as bad thrash we are also treated to a bit of Red Hot Chilli Peppers style funk and a smattering of prog metal which all adds up to a mish mash of an album.
Loudness have tried to update their sound and move with the times which is commendable, after all who can say they are still the same as they were 30 years ago, however there is no excuse for substandard songwriting and below par performances. The band are planning an extensive world tour on the back of this release, let’s hope the setlist is culled from the glory years of the 80’s!
