Album review: MISSISSIPPI STOMP – Shine

MISSISSIPPI STOMP - Shine

[Release date 22.04.17]

Mississippi Stomp are an Americana outfit from, yes, you guessed it  [northeast] Mississppi.  Tupelo, to be precise  the home of the King.  Shine is their sophomore release.
Together since the early nineties, with the focal point husband and wife duo Gid and Sunny Stuckey (vocals/guitar and vocals/ keys respectively), the band boast an eight strong line-up, serving up a soulful brew of southern rock in the vein of the Black Crowes and The Derek Trucks Band.

Shine, an earthy, rootsy, 33 minute set, offers plenty of tasty guitar work (well, there are four guitar players in the band!), some subtle keyboard playing (they ‘ve got two of those), topped off by Gid’s grizzly lead vocals, which work best when underpinned by Sunny’s exquisite harmony lines.

Laid down in just five hours, there’s a ‘live’ feel to the set that chugs along like early Skynyrd, suggesting the band would be a blast live.  But despite some fine playing, generally speaking, the material is fairly run of the mill, and Gid’s vocals don’t wholly convince.

In fact, some of the best moments come when Sunny takes the lead mic, coming across like a southern Grace Potter.  Sadly, those opportunities are limited like on the soulful ‘One Song’ (where lead lines are shared) and on the new wave / punk flavoured ‘Zodiac’.  Uncomplicated, and for those who yearn for simpler times.  ***
