Singles reviews: MARIA JORDAN, CHARLIE WINSTON,STEEL THREADS

MARIA JORDAN – What You Gonna Do (Released 25th February) www.mariajordan.com/

Second single to come across my musical radar from Maria Jordan and like the last one, the rather good ‘Better Than Nothing’, this new song ‘What You Gonna Do’ is another glorious light country meets pop. She has had success on the US country charts but her appeal is much wider and this song is not unlike something you could see Taylor Swift recording. A definite name to watch out for. ****1/2

CHARLIE WINSTON – Where Can I Buy Happiness www.charliewinston.com

The lead single taken of his third album ‘Running Still’ and he comes from a family of musicians as his parents were a 1960′s folk duo. This is a breezy little number, strong lyric and a nice backbeat of drums/percussion and programmed beats. This does what a single should do have you expecting the album eagerly and more wonderful sounds. ****1/2

Steel Threads – At The Start Again

English ‘power-folk’ band Steel Threads (Neil Wardleworth – guitars / vocals, Stuart Eastham, and Laura Wilcockson – fiddle / vocals) have done a remarkable job on their latest single in taking the Jon Bon Jovi Wanted Dead Or Alive template and recasting it.  Everything’s there from the acoustic, to the JBJ vocals, and the slow burn.  An engaging crowd pleaser, but hardly original.  ***

Miss Terry Blue – Hush

A multinational group from Germany, Italy, Russia and the UK fronted by vocalist Isabella Lueen, Miss Terry Blues debut single serves up an infectious mix of pop, funk, and soul with a strong vocal performance that would sit more than comfortably on the latest long player by Paloma Faith.  But something stronger (and more original) may be needed to make that all important breakthrough.  ***

Mooli – Love Hurts

Vocalist Kristina Smith writer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Ben Copeland have dug out some old synths and travelled back to the late 1970s to produce a single that revisits the classic sound of The Human League, Soft Cell and Heaven 17.  Derivative, and somewhat time warped, but apparently popular on the dance scene.  **1/2

Hoda Mohajerani – Raging Waves

Iran / British singer, songwriter, guitarist Hoda has taken it back to the early eighties with a single that echoes back to the heydays of Hazel O’Connor and Lene lovich.  It almost works but lacks that ‘extra something’ like the Eighth Day sax break.  Too derivative for my liking.  **1/2
