POWERTRAIN – Off The Rails

Powertrain are a four piece made up of guys who have all been on the circuit for a long time and have a wealth of experience and talent within their ranks. The drummer, Jeffery McCormack alone has appeared in 40 CD’s of varying styles to date, an impressive tally. The band play classic hard rock driven both by guitar and Hammond organ and cite Uriah Heep and Deep Purple as influences, sounds like a good combination to me.

They do however make hard work of it. The album sounds laboured throughout and whilst their musicianship is never in question, it is all very workmanlike with no real spark. I wanted to like them, I really did, but it was far too much effort. Individually there are some nice touches, Kendall Betchell on vocals does a passable Ronnie Dio impression and also provides some good guitar work, these moments though are too infrequent to lift the album much beyond mediocre.

This album doesn’t add up to it’s sum of parts, it does though sap your strength and will as you listen through it, not something I shall be doing again in a hurry I’m afraid.
