THE DOORS – Live At The Bowl ’68

Eagle Vision

Apparently a legendary concert, but I have to admit to not being a fan, finding the band overrated. But this show has been released before and is highly regarded. This release, however, restores the full original show with tracks cut from the original release, adding new camera angles and remastered and remixed sound.

With their blend of hard rock with blues, acid, West Coast and Psychedelia The Doors were popular and typified the music scene of the era. There are a few songs that stand out, the iconic Hello I Love You, for example, and the slide guitar on Moonlight Drive stands out. The show opens with an extended intro and then When The Music Over, with Back Door Man and A Little Game amongst the set. For the most part the band show little energy, and stripped down sound of drums, keyboard, guitar and vocals sounding basic at times. And for too long vocalist Jim Morrison is lost his own world – there is little rapport with the audience, and much of his vocals don’t match the music, he could be reading poetry or ranting over a soundtrack of, well, anything. When he does talk to the crowd he seems a little out of it.

The hit Light My Fire is a standout, largely because the band are tight and cohesive on this extended workout.

The main show is 71 minutes, with over an hour’s bonus material with a documentary or two and band interviews, which will please fans, adding extra package.

It is a good package, well recorded and presented; just a band I’ve never understood.
