Album Review: FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH – The Wrong Side Of Heaven and The Righteous Side Of Hell – Volume 1

Eleven Seven ( Release date – Out now)

This is the snappily titled new album from FFDP and is the first of two releases planned for this year. Anyone who witnessed the band at Download this year will be in no doubt that they are in fighting form and that their fanbase is increasing by the day.

The album kicks off in fine fashion with ‘Lift Me Up’ which was the first track lifted from the disc and has been played extensively on rock radio stations. The track features Rob Halford on guest vocals which, along with a scream along chorus, adds up to possibly the track of the year. If you are up to speed with the FFDP back catalogue you will find few surprises here which is no bad thing. As always the band blend brutal riffs and softer passages perfectly, a clenched fist in a cashmere glove if you will, all delivered with urgency and intensity.

Frontman Ivan Moody puts in a great performance throughout the album whether he is spitting out the lyrics on the likes of ‘Burn MF’ and ‘I Am Sin’ or taking a more laid back stance as on ‘M.I.N.E (End This Way) and on the album title track which is a fantastic slowburning rocker.

As well as Rob Halford the guys have also enlisted  Max Cavalera and Jamey Jasta amongst others to help out which adds an extra dimension to the disc. The songwriting and playing is impressive and shows a band with great depth which keeps things fresh and interesting.

This is a superb album and with the promise of more to come in the form of ‘Volume Two’ due later in the year I wouldn’t bet against Five Finger Death Punch finishing 2013 riding a wave of success of tsunami proportions.
