Jorn – Bring Heavy Metal to the Land

Frontiers 2012 www.frontiers.it

I can’t start without stating that this has to be one of the worst album titles I’ve heard in a while…but we’ll let the music do the talking shall we…

Norwegian vocalist Jorn Lande has been around since forming Vagabond in 1994 with ex-members of TNT. Since then he has been rather prolific releasing 8 studio albums under his own name plus ones with Masterplan, Allen-Lande, Ark and guesting on both Avantasia and Ayreon releases.

This, his 9th studio album, is actually the first Jorn solo album that I’ve actually heard and it’s a rather fine one at that. It brings together Jorn’s love of Dio, Black Sabbath (Dio-era), Rainbow (er guess what…Dio-era) with touches of Whitesnake and even classic Bon Jovi. Classic heavy metal basically. As you might have gathered there is a definite Dio feel to Jorn’s vocal style and his lyrics but that’s not a bad thing in my book.

The albums opens gently with the acoustic “My Road” before the epic title cut and the even more epic “A Thousand Cuts” set out the stall. The first cover on the album “Ride Like The Wind” starts out different before you think “oh yeah…it’s that Saxon song” (Christopher Cross did the West Coast original of course!!). The second cover is that of his own Masterplan song “Time to be King” which as Jorn puts it is “more rock orientated” than the original. Only “Black Morning” feels slightly out of place being a mellow almost ballad like number that brings early Bad Company to mind. “Ride to the Guns” is an enjoyable romp about the Crimean War if I’m not mistaken and album closer “I Came to Rock” really needs no explanation.

Highly enjoyable heavy metal like they used to make and thankfully Jorn still does!!
