BLEAK ANGEL – Reborn

Second album by this UK folk rock band, who are currently down to a duo of Tim Balmford (songwriter/vocals) and Daisy O’Halloran (vocals) although former member Steve Morse (not the Deep Purple one!) plays 12 string guitar. The music is a mix of acoustic folk, folk rock and in the final song ‘Morning Blues’ a little bit of blues. This song is good fun and with added piano making for a fitting end to the album. But there are many delights before this including the title track, a lovely acoustic number with Tim Balmford on vocals and a simple, but effective guitar playing behind the vocals.

‘You’re A Dream’ (where a full band joins in) and ‘Truly Smiling’ where both vocalists join together produce highly catchy folk rock tunes, nearest I could find are the Mostly Autumn offshoot Breathing Space, less the keyboards. ‘Kingdom Of Heaven’ has a more reflective air and will impress lovers of acoustic folk.

For a self-produced and released album Bleak Angel have a real air of professionalism about them and the songs to impress. Of definite interest to folk fans and those who enjoy more rock orientated acts like Mostly Autumn and Breathing Space, although Bleak Angel play in a more stripped down style.
