Album review: PRAYING MANTIS – Katharsis

Frontiers [Release date: 28.02.22]

Only occasionally since their debut have Praying Mantis registered a decent sized blip on the radar of rock music in the UK.

It was in Japan – where NWOBHM labelling was less meaningful – that the band’s much more melodic rock form of metal found a sizeable audience.

Seven albums on Pony Canyon provided the momentum that propelled the band back into Europe, and a deal with Frontiers in 2006. Katharsis is the band’s fifth album on the label.

The Troy brothers’ new vocalist, Jaycee Cuijpers certainly has a welcome European everyman tone in his voice. It’s unfortunate though, that a few of the songs are more noticeable for their portentous lyrics than their songwriting strengths.

Opener, ‘Cry For The Nations’ overcomes that handicap by taking us on a rollicking melodic rock ride of twin guitar interplay and carefully calibrated riffs. It’s the scene setter.

In fact, throughout the album’s eleven tracks, everything is precisely measured. A light touch production gloss and some slick, metallised AOR-ish arrangements are applied to most tracks, but yet the album doesn’t sound like it was made to formula.

From the rock songs ‘Wheels In Motion’ and ‘Masquerade’, to the power ballads ‘Sacrifice’ and ‘Long Time Coming’, all are fresh sounding and indeed memorable.

On several standout songs, especially the Survivor/Journeyish ‘Closer To Heaven’ and the bluesy, stomping ‘Aint No Rock’n'Roll In Heaven’, the intensity in Cjuiper’s vocals pulls off the twin tricks of building the drama, while softening us up for a romantic interlude.

And further on, there’s a not unattractive attempt to philophise about a world in turmoil – ‘Find Our Way Back Home’, ‘Devil Never Changes’ – and how so much boils down to personal responsibility. Never a truer word. ***1/2

Album review: BETH HART – A Tribute To Led Zeppelin

BETH HART – A Tribute To Led Zeppelin

Provogue/Mascot Label Group [Release date 25.02.22]

A brave move by Beth Hart to take on the musical catalogue of such an iconic band, some would argue the various covers of Led Zeppelin’s music has been done to excess already. However, we will let the music, and more importantly, the singing, provide a final verdict.

Beth Hart is backed by an A-list of musicians including guitarists Rob Cavallo and Tim Pierce (Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner), bassist Chris Chaney (Rob Zombie, Jane’s Addiction, Slash), Jamie Muhoberac (Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop) on keyboards, drummers Dorian Crozier (Celine Dion, Joe Cocker) and Matt Laug (Alanis Morissette, Alice Cooper), with David Campbell (Muse, Aerosmith) scoring the orchestral arrangements.

There are two medleys, ‘Dancing Days/When The Levee Breaks’ and ‘No Quarter/Babe I’m Gonna Leave You’. Sure to get some Led Zep diehards in a lather as Dio’s medleys did back in the 80s, but they do work. ‘Dancing Days/When The Levee Breaks’ in particular works well and that drumbeat is suitably bombastic.

‘Stairway To Heaven’ is perhaps the weakest cover on here or maybe more due to fact for this reviewer it is one of those songs you have heard too many times now. Whereas ‘Black Dog’ Beth Hart makes her own with the added strings the musical cherry on the top.

‘The Rain Song’ is a fine song to finish the album on. Again the strings really add to this, pushing into grandiose territory, one even dare say Meat Loaf style? Beth Hart really does pour her vocal power and emotion into these covers.

This album is about the voice and Bath Hart is one of the few around today who can match Robert Plant in his prime Led Zeppelin days. Doubters & naysayers 0 Beth Hart 1 ****

Album review: OYSTERBAND – Read The Sky

OYSTERBAND – Read The Sky

Running Man Records [Release date 04.03.22]

After an 8-year gap – as the band explain “hey, we were busy” – the Oysterband return with their twelfth studio album, (fourteen including their two collaborative albums with June Tabor).

Oysterband have been going strong since 1992 (from 1976 to 1992 they were the Oyster Band), yet for many may have flown under their musical radar. The core original trio of John Jones (melodeon, lead vocals), Alan Prosser (guitars, vocals) and Ian Telfer (violin, keyboard, vocals) are joined by Al Scott (bass, mandolin, vocals), Sean Randle (drums, percussion, vocals) and Adrian Oxaal (cello, electric guitar, vocals) – who is also a member of James.

‘The Corner of the Room’ is a tale of looking back at young love and wondering what happened to that person – did they realise their dreams? A rousing chorus makes this song a shoe-in for live sets. ‘Born Under The Same Stars’ and ‘Wonders Are Passing’ are another couple of instant on the ears tunes. The latter song again highlighting how the world is changing rapidly and not for the better.

They certainly pack a punch on ‘The Time Is Now’, written for and released at the time of the COP 26 summit in Glasgow. “Ice turns to mud, the future slides away” – they get their message across by cutting to the chase. Indeed, there is no time for niceties now, action is what is required and this song is a powerful clarion call, with a solid rock backing it works perfectly. ‘My Son’ packs a powerful punch lyrically too.

Special mention to the album artwork as it is very distinctive and the digipak folds out beautifully.

Oysterband still have plenty to say that is relevant and we are lucky enough that they are still out there making music. ****

Album review: FASTER PUSSYCAT – Babylon, The Elektra Years (4 CD boxset)

Cherry Red [release date: 25.02.22]

Faster Pussycat were one of a number of apparently identikit Glamrock bands who emerged from the LA Club scene in the mid eighties.

Many fell by the wayside, but some stood out. Faster Pussycat succeeded in carving out their own sizeable niche by cross fertilising Glam, Sleaze and Metal. In doing so, they created a successful pop aesthetic that was almost a parody of the music of the bands around them.

Vocalist Taime Down, guitarist Brent Muscat and bassman Greg Steele were the founding members and songwriters, effectively the driving force behind the band.

Their three albums from that time, the self titled debut (1987), Wake Me When It’s Over (1989) and Whipped (1992) enjoyed combined sales in excess of two million. You can’t knock that. They are here in this boxset along with the Live And Rare EP from 1990.

‘Babylon’ and ‘Bathroom Wall’ were the clear highlights on a debut album that was ultimately filled to the brim with largely generic Glamrock. The single versions became MTV staples, giving the album a leg up into the lower reaches of the US charts.

The EP is arguably the most interesting constituent in this bundle.
6 tracks, a mix of live cuts, edits and remixes of the key recordings from the first two albums. ‘House Of Pain’, ‘Slip Of The Tongue’ (not that one), ‘Pulling Weeds’ and ‘Poison Ivy’ (no, not that one either), all originally appeared on Wake Me When It’s Over, the band’s best selling album, and are the picks.

The EP’s live version of the hit ballad, ‘House Of Pain’, has a bluesy spontaniety that lifts it out of the band’s glamrock past. Similarly, the lustful rock of ‘Slip Of The Tongue’ seems invigorated done live, and a professional soundboard mix gives it an additional sparkle. These two tracks confirmed that this band had considerable potential.

The third album, Whipped, hoisted the primary colours of country, rock and blues high above the scores of bands desperately trying to stay relevant in the face of Nirvana’s assault on popular rock’n'roll.

Songs like ‘Nonstop To Nowhere’, ‘Big Dictionary’ and ‘Mr Lovedog’ built on the notion that is a band who think they’re going places, and aim to get there fast. But they couldn’t shake fate, and the band broke up a year later.

This boxset adds four bonus tracks, the highlight being the band’s version of Carly Simon’s ‘You’re So Vain’, recorded for Elektra’s 40th Anniversary album, Rubiyait, in 1990. ****

Album review: CLIVE MITTEN – Tales From A Misspent Youth Vol.1

CLIVE MITTEN - Tales From A Misspent Youth Vol.1

Bumnote Records [Release date 28.01.22] www.twelfthnight.info

Do we really need more cover versions?  Do we really need to hear another take on ‘Tubular Bells’?

There seems to be a trend, maybe as rock gets old, to revisit and occasionally reinterpret old glories.  I suppose this recycling (and reflection) is  inevitable and it has been given more impetus by Lockdown during the past couple of years.  We are where we are.

Clive Mitten’s take on this sub-genre could easily have fallen into James Last plays Prog Rock territory.  It is down to Mitten’s musicality and taste (evidenced on the impressive ‘Suite Cryptique’ and with the band Twelfth Night) that this double album is very listenable.

Unashamedly, this is Clive’s tribute to his musical heroes of the 1970s as he was, er,  progressively inspired by the likes of Pink Floyd, Supertramp and Peter Gabriel/Genesis. These artists make up the core of this first volume, the first of what may well become a series.

There are two ways of approaching this task: you either go with the prog/rock standards or alternatively you dig out some of the genre’s obscurities (both bands and tunes) and give them a new lease of life.

This first outing goes with the former and staying pretty faithful to the originals although subtly different in places.  For example, Mitten has rearranged the end of ‘Tubular Bells’ Part 1 and added variations to Part 2.

It’s a labour of love for sure, beautifully orchestrated and helpfully annotated by Clive in the liner notes, and could well become part of a definitive series of instrumental prog classics.  ***1/2

Album review: LANA LANE – Neptune Blue

LANA LANE - Neptune Blue

Frontiers [Release date: 28.01.22]

Neptune Blue is Lana Lane’s first album release since 2012.

The close knit band that surrounds her includes her husband/ producer/ keyboard player, Erik Norlander, with Jeff Kollman on guitar and John (Asia) Payne on vocals, both of whom are bandmates of Norlander on the new Alan Parsons’ Live Project.

Neptune Blue signals a change in musical direction for Lane.

It’s hardly radical, the symphonic rock and prog stylings of her previous 20 solo albums (not to mention Ayreon and Rocket Scientists recordings) have not been totally jettisoned, but she’s moved off now into more of an AOR/Melodic Rock direction. Although at times, she wanders off the path into the undergrowth.

Opener, ‘Remember Me’s churchy organ, thumping rhythms and just about pulse quickening hook would have been called “mainstream” rock in the eighties. ‘Under The Big Sky’ is a close relation, pulling a strong, hooky chorus out of a soft rock arrangement. Both are very Heart. Lane’s vocals resemble Ann Wilson’s to the extent you initially might think these tracks got left on the cutting room floor after the Bad Animals and Brigade sessions.

Apart from a few beacons of light toward the back end of the album, the songs bland out into Carpenter’s cut outs (Come Lift Me Up, Neptune Blue) and uninspired lyrical choices (Don’t Disturb The Occupants).

The funky country rock of ‘Bring It On Home’ (Kollman is superb here), the balladic, Beatlish heavy pop of ‘Someone Like You’, and ‘Miss California’ lift the album considerably toward the end. The pace and intensity of this latter tracked is badly missed earlier in the album, as are the insightful observations on the human condition. Even the title is a neat play on words.

It’s a bit of mixed bag of delights and disappointments then. Prog and Symphonic Rock fans will miss their fix. AOR fans might enjoy only the occasional high. ***

Album review: STEVE VAI – Inviolate

Favored Nations/Mascot Label Group [Release date 28.01.22 - vinyl 18.03.22]

With over 40 years in the music industry, Steve Vai should need no introduction, he is a virtuoso guitarist, composer and producer, considered by many as one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

Vai has sold over 15 million records, received three Grammy Awards, and recorded with music legends like Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth, Whitesnake; toured extensively and recorded live projects as well as authoring music theory book designed to help both beginners and veteran guitar players.

His previous album, Modern Primitive was released nearly six years ago. This latest offering, Inviolate, is Steve Vai laid bare, it is all about the guitar, with Vai still managing to find new techniques that would challenge the most accomplished of players.

The composition of the songs and the sublime guitar playing mainly on a Gretsch, along with his supporting band, gives you a treat in sheer skills, listen in awe, I did!

Inviolate presents his most focused, streamlined and perhaps invigorating music in years. “It’s very ‘Vai,’ whatever that means,” he says, and then laughs. “Someone else might be better than me at explaining what that is. But it’s just very honest music.

Because a lot of my records, they’re long and there’s a lot of concepts and playing around with stories. This one has none of that. This is nine pretty dense all-instrumental compositions that I wanted to capture and record so I could get out there and play them live for people.”

The opening track of the album, “Teeth of the Hydra,” was written and composed on a one-of-a-kind custom guitar he coined the Hydra (see cover art). Built in conjunction with the designers at Hoshino and based on a “steampunk motif” idea of Vai’s, the Hydra is a beast of an instrument – a one-bodied, two-headstock-ed, three-neck-ed creature, “It’s an incredibly-built machine,” Vai says.

Some of the songs were released in 2021, ‘Candlepower’ and ‘Knappsack’ which was made following his shoulder surgery, at a time when his right arm was in a sling (or, as his surgeon, Dr. Knapp, called it, a “knappsack”), and thus was able to use only his left hand when playing the piece. Standout tracks for me ‘Avalancha’ and ‘Knappsack’ – this album is atmospheric, challenging and a must for any guitar aficionados. It won’t to be everyone’s taste but if you are a technique geek, this is for you. ****

Gig review: TEN YEARS AFTER- 100 Club, London, 24 January 2022

Ten Years After have a considerable pedigree- leading lights in the British blues explosion and participants at Woodstock, as the sixties gave way to the seventies they were a big enough draw at the time to notch four top ten albums and a top ten single. Yet their profile has long been ridiculously low in their home country.

Their name rarely seems to be mentioned either as an influence or a continuing recording outfit and appearances on home soil have been rare as they concerate on overseas markets. As far as I am aware this was their first London appearance since I saw them at the Underworld in 2003, though they have played a couple of festivals. Fortunately they made amends with this show, at one of the few venues to survive from their heyday, as part of the January Blues Festival, thankfully restored after a covid year out.

There was a decent turnout and a very well-received support band, all the way from  Aberdeen in Gerry Jablonksi and the Electric Band. Their distinguishing feature was the instrumental battles between the eponymous guitarist and lead singer and harmonica player Peter Narojczyk that featured on nearly every song including openers ‘Breaking the Stones’ and ‘Heavy Water’.

TEN YEARS AFTER- 100 Club, London, 24 January 2022

The prominence of the harmonica  – and Peter picked from a selection of a good couple of dozen in their own flight case- is not unusual by itself in the blues but inserted into the band’s raw hard rocking sound, it made for an intriguing combination.

‘Koss’ was a tribute to the legendary Free guitarist with various song titles inserted,  while in a tribute to their late drummer Dave Innes, in a change of pace his successor Lewis Fraser sang the first part of the ballad ‘Anybody’,  and was also called upon for a cover of ‘Little Wing’. Ending with a couple of catchier numbers in the storming ‘Goddamn’ and the slightly poppier feel of ‘Slave to the Rhythm’, I felt thoroughly glad I’d made the effort to arrive early and catch an enjoyable and entertaining set.

TEN YEARS AFTER- 100 Club, London, 24 January 2022

Ten Years After still boast two members of their original quartet in drummer Ric Lee and keyboardist Chick Churchill, both now 76, but this was my first sighting of Marcus Bonfanti, the ‘new boy’ though it is actually eight years since he followed Joe Gooch in inheriting mantle of succeeding late guitarist and singer Alvin Lee. That would be an unenviable task for anyone, but with a strong voice and a magnetic, hirsute stage presence, he rose comfortably to the challenge.

On the opener ‘Land of the Vandals’ his guitar and Chick’s keyboards combined to produce a memorable instrumental hook underpinning a straight ahead rocker, though it wasn’t immediately recognisable to me and I subsequently discovered it was drawn from their 2017 ‘Sting in the Tale’ album, another indicator of that low profile in this country.

TEN YEARS AFTER- 100 Club, London, 24 January 2022

‘One of These Days’ was much more reassuringly TYA in style in its bluesy jamming with Marcus even playing harmonica, before a rapturous cheer greeted the hypnotic riff of  ‘Hear Me Calling’ (the first TYA song I ever heard, albeit in the shape of Slade’s cover). A solo on his mimimalist looking Nord keyboard proved that Chick retained his old playing magic, all the more reassuring as he had come on stage a worryingly frail figure who at one point seemed overwhelmed by his surroundings.

‘I’d Love to Change the World’ was memorable, mixing those folky passages- and lyrics that somehow seem even more relevant today-  with Marcus exploding into a guitar solo of stunning speed and fluency. ‘Silver Spoon Lady’ (another from ‘Sting in the Tale’) was more straight ahead but enjoyable boogie, before they used up another one of their signature songs relatively early in the set in ‘Love Like a Man’ with that huge, slow riff. The middle section saw Marcus jamming with former Jethro Tull member Jonathan Noyce, standing in for usual bassist Colin Hodgkinson who had injured himself. Considering the TYA sound rests a lot on lengthy and spontaneous jams,  he acquitted himself admirably.

TEN YEARS AFTER- 100 Club, London, 24 January 2022

In a surprise change of pace Ric came to the front of the stage to fondly tell some stories of the band and Alvin Lee’s earlier days and play percussion on a mini acoustic set of songs from those years, beginning with the whimsical, almost psychedelic ‘Portable People’ before the more traditional bluesy stomps of Bill Broonzy’s ‘Don’t Want You Woman’ and ‘Losing the Dogs’.

Having got that out of their system,  the rest of the set featured those lengthy souped up jams, often of old blues numbers, that characterise the band. My enjoyment of ‘Spoonful ‘ was slightly dulled by over-familiarity with Cream’s version then ‘Good Morning Little Schoolgirl’ (which surely would be ‘cancelled’ these days) featured more great jamming between Marcus and Jonathan.

TEN YEARS AFTER- 100 Club, London, 24 January 2022

‘I Just Can’t Keep From Crying’ was transformed as it progressed from a slow ballad by another highly impressive solo from Marcus of great speed combined with feel, before he did likewise on ‘I’m Going Home’,  delivered in their signature style, with Ric’s drumming giving it an almost jazzy swing and the band improvising and slipping in a rock n roll medley.

Discretion was the better part of valour as rather than return to the dressing rooms and back for an encore, they stayed put to take the applause before seeing out the night with ‘Choo Choo Mama’,  a relatively more concise slice of boogie with some great honky tonk playing by Chick.

TEN YEARS AFTER- 100 Club, London, 24 January 2022

I’d been looking forward to this gig simply because it had been so long, and with a sense of curiosity, and yet the performance was even better than I had dared expect. The passage of time is not on their side, but the blend of old and new faces has breathed fresh life into a band ripe for a long overdue revival in their home country.

Album review: BATTLE BEAST – Circus of Doom

BATTLE BEAST – Circus of Doom

Nuclear Blast [Release date 21.01.22]

Album number six from Battle Beast, after a bit of a gap since 2019’s highly enjoyable ‘No More Hollywood Endings’. Their line-up remains the same, namely Eero Sipilä (bass), Pyry Vikki (drums), Janne Björkroth (keytar), Juuso Soinio (rhythm guitar), Joona Björkroth (lead guitar), and vocalist Noora Louhimo.

The opening trio of the title track, ‘Wings of Light’ and ‘Master of Illusion’, could all be singles, as each has an instant chorus and those uplifting synths & rhythms that are one of the band’s trademarks. Hopefully listeners outside of the metal genre will get to hear one, or all of these, as they really do have that crossover appeal.

‘Russian Roulette’ is one for the air keyboards fans amongst you. The synths/keys on here are suitably OTT (as is the piano/vocals effects midsection), which coupled with an 80’s soundtrack feel, is another album highlight.

You can’t pen a review about Battle Beast without mention of vocalist Noora Louhimo. She defines the term ‘powerhouse vocalist’, yet doesn’t resort to the banshee wail that can put you off other female fronted metal bands. Lyrically it is proper D&D too – loving the lines ‘My hammer, The eye of the storm’ on ‘Eye of the Storm’.

Another powerful and fun listen from the mighty Battle Beast. Sure to put a smile on your face in these dark days. ****

Album review : GIRLSCHOOL – From London To Nashville (2 CD Set)

The Store For Music [Release date: 21.01.22]

Girlschool experienced their share of heartache… label let downs, revolving door membership issues, conflicting views on musical direction and the struggles to sustain their ambitions in the face of all of the above, never mind the industry’s prevalent sexism.

But they soldiered on regardless, having to endure some critical bashings by the music press, but enjoying brief peaks of fame nonetheless.

This 2 CD/ 2 Live Gig release is taken from the band’s concerts in Nashville and London, both in 1984.

It was a key year for the band. This was to be the time of transition, from Metallised Biker Punk, to polished American Pop/Metal. Success beckoned.

Live From Nashville
The US gig looks back on the raw and raucous, rough edged rock of their first 3 albums, reeling off a series of consistently strong songs. The blissfully thunderous ”Screaming Blue Murder’ and ‘Hit & Run’, and the DIY Garage/Biker Rock excitement of ‘Rock Me Shock Me’ and ‘Emergency 999′ drive the gig forward like a rock’n'roll juggernaut. ****

Live From The Camden Palace, London
The London gig sees the band straddling the boundary line between the past and the polish of their 4th and latest album, the Radio/MTV friendly Play Dirty.

In fact only 4 tracks from those earlier recordings, ‘Hit & Run’, ‘C’mon Lets Go’, ‘Emergency 999′ and ‘You Got Me’ survived the shift from the studio to the Camden Palace stage.

The remainder are an even mix of songs from Play Dirty and those planned for 1985 album, Running Wild.

Of the new material, ‘Love Is A Lie’, ‘Running For Cover’ and ‘Are You Ready To Rock’ never feel like too much, or not enough. Hearing them live deceived us to thinking perhaps the new, improved pop metal sound would be just like this. When in fact “just like this” was reserved for live performance. ***1/2

Album review: URIAH HEEP – vinyl picture discs

…Very ‘Eavy …Very ‘Umble, Salisbury, Demons And Wizards, The Magician’s Birthday

BMG [Release date 28.01.22]

Led by the ever present and ever grinning guitarist Mick Box (the sole remaining founding member), Uriah Heep are iconic legends in British progressive rock. Formed in the late 60s, they were originally called Spice (with connections to bands like Toe Fat and Gods).

Many line-ups later, the band are still going very strong, but in the early 70s the band’s sound was centred around Ken Hensley’s organ and David Byron’s powerful operatic vocals. Before later forays into solid hard rock, their early 70s sound epitomised classic progressive rock.

Although the catalogue has been issued many times on a variety of formats, four of their first five albums are here reissued as picture disc LPs and they look and feel as good as they sound.

1970’s debut Very ‘Eavy Very ‘Umble was originally issued on Vertigo (Mercury in the US), and soon reissued on Bronze, and recording had started in mid 1969. Opener Gypsy is much loved classic oft played live. Crunchy guitars, grinding organ, operatic vocals, it was certainly heavy for the period (the album has been called proto heavy metal), then there’s the ballad Come Away Melinda, which showcased Byron’s range and versatility.

The occasional genre hopping was slated at the time, but there was a feel the band hadn’t quite found their feet (2 tracks were recorded while still Spice, with a session pianist, and not rerecorded when Hensley joined). But there is plenty to love here and in retrospect it is widely (and rightfully) considered a genre defining classic.

Recorded at the tail end of 1970 and issued in early 1971, second album Salisbury is a more solid and consistent affair (a contemporary review called it a failed experiment – I still laugh at that now). Ken Hensley had taken control of much of the song writing.

There’s still some variety on the album, without being completely tangential. Opener Bird Of Prey (which featured on the US issue of the debut) is a lesson in prog rock and one still loved today.

The acoustic The Park is reminiscent of Come Away Melinda. Lady In Black is a short, catchy number often extended live with crowd involvement.

The classic on this album is the 16 minute title track, featuring a 24 piece orchestra. A mini rock opera in its own right, a great guitar solo or two in there, a little overblown but that is what prog was all about back in the day. Another fabulous album.

Also issued in 1971 was their third album Look At Yourself, a personal fave, but not issued (yet?) as part of this series.

1972 kicked off with Demons And Wizards, by which time the chemistry was well and truly cemented. Here Box, Hensley and Byron are augmented by drummer Lee Kerslake and incoming bassist Gary Thain (though Mark Clarke appears on a couple of tracks). This was the first album to feature the iconic art of Roger Dean.

The Wizard is a great tune, and Traveller In Time nods to the same kind of glam that T Rex and Elton John alluded to at the time, albeit in a heavier fashion. Then there’s the conundrum of Easy Livin’; a catchy blast and a hit single by a prog rock band? Indeed yes. If this track isn’t well known by anyone reading this, well, it should be. Solid, great riff, and Byron’s vocals go from solid to whimsical falsetto and back again.

Also issued in 1972 is The Magician’s Birthday, again illustrated by Roger Dean. A much loved album and in a time of revolving door line-ups there’s some stability here.

While the musicianship is spot on, and there are some very good songs such as Spider Woman and Sweet Lorraine, none really follow opener Sunrise with the same aplomb. The 10 minute title track is always worth going back to though.

Great times, great albums, and these look and feel lovely on picture disc.

Sound wise, these are as good as picture discs will get; by definition through the method of manufacture (the pictorial layer and lacquer), the needle will always be a layer removed from the original grooves. But that said, the sound is warm and you really can’t beat the look of one of these spinning on your deck.

These albums really should be in your record collection in one form or another and these are a great addition.

Album review: TOKYO BLADE – Fury

Dissonance/Cherry Red [Release date: 21.01.22]

It’s interesting to note that Tokyo Blade’s current members, including guitarist Andy Boulton and vocalist Alan Marsh, were with the band almost from the beginning, but left and rejoined at various intervals since the band’s inception in 1982.

What comes around…

They are another band who have bought into the lockdown cliché, in that they claim to have used it to refine their craft and subsequently to write and record new material.

Then, listening to Fury, the band’s 10th album, it’s clear that the cliché has taken on new life, and that the band should lockdown more often.

30 to 40 years on, the heads down, pedal-to-the-metal mindset of NWOBHM has ultimately been replaced by a heads up, informed view of the turmoil surrounding us, politically and economically.

15 songs here: focused, self aware heavy metal, each track cutting its own path through a post NWOBHM soundscape that has virtually been usurped and disappeared by the rise of European Power Metal.

Maybe highly melodic polemics like ‘Blood Red Sky’ and ‘When The Bullets Fly’, two songs that take a lightfooted musical journey through heavy metal territory, despite the abrasive lyrics, are a natural pushback against Power Metal excesses. There’s an underlying dissonance in these songs that anchors them to the genre’s industrial roots, if further proof were needed.

A distinct Thin Lizzy feel to the guitar tones and harmonics on ‘Heart Of Darkness’ and to a lesser extent, ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ are surprise moments. But the body of each song is remarkably lean, clean and confident, reprising the twin guitar metal of the ‘Blade’s past, with the narratives exploring the cultural revisionism that is rife in today’s media.

Putting the brooding lyrics to oneside, the album packs in a number of truly outstanding heavy metal songs, with the slower paced yet eminently anthemic ‘Cold Light Of Day’, and ‘We All Fall Down’, full of slick guitar gearshifts and galloping rhythms, being absolute standouts. While elsewhere ‘Man In A Box’ and ‘Disposable Me’ lock into a glammy, heavy metal groove.

All in all, it’s an hour and 20 minutes of prime Tokyo Blade. They’re grappling with weighty themes at times. But at least we listeners emerge as the winners. ****

Album review: GRAHAM BONNET – The Historic Collection (2 CDs)

Store For Music [Release date 21.01.22]

Graham Bonnet needs little or no introduction.

His 5 decade back catalogue is a rich and constant source of reissues and expanded versions.

This double CD package sees his 1991 album, Here Comes The Night paired with Live Around The World.

Here Comes… is a game of two halves, and a covers album. In some ways a return to the classic pop tropes of his earlier material. On yet another version of ‘Only One Woman’, the artificiality of the synth soaked production actually adds to the song’s blazing pop majesty.

It’s in good company, being surrounded by material written by Denny Laine (Eyes Of A Child), Ray Davies (I Go To Sleep) and uber popular music songwriter/ producers, Lieber & Stoller (Don’t).

We first saw Bonnet’s soulful rhythm& blues leanings taking root in his self titled 1977 recording. Mixed in with the classic pop songs already mentioned, a sensual sax turns a cover of Them/Van Morrison’s ‘Here Comes The Night’ into something really interesting. Sam Cooke’s prescient ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ and ‘I’ll Go Crazy’, a huge R&B hit for James Brown in the sixties, contribute to Bonnet’s reputation for cross genre artistry.

The Live CD plucks top performances from Bonnet at various venues from all over the globe.

Stomping reconstructions of ‘Since You Been Gone’ and ‘All Night Long’ are the not unexpected highlights. Still, the soaring ‘Eyes Of The World’ and oft underrated ‘Night Games’ cross the line not too far behind.

In all honesty, when you can also include high calibre material like ‘Island In The Sun’, ‘Assault, Attack’ and ‘Lost In Hollywood’ in your repertoire, your fans might well be reminded of why they got into melodic hard rock in the first place. ***1/2

Album review: DAN REED NETWORK – Let’s Hear It For The King

DAN REED NETWORK - Let's Hear It For The King

Drakkar Entertainment [Release date 17.06.22]

In 2022 all we need is some live music and a Dan Reed Network album.

This is the band’s third album of their more recent renaissance following 2018′s ‘Origins’ which sprinkled some new stuff along with re-workings.  And if they’ll never quite recapture the sheer novelty and vibrancy of 1989′s  ‘Slam’ this comes pretty damn close.

Always with great songwriting, sweeping, anthemic melodies and rooted in “the groove”.  Plus of course a social and political awareness.

‘Pretty Karma’ is a stonking start with all these expected elements whilst ‘The Ghost Inside’ is led by a dramatic Brion James riff.

‘Starlight’ – an early single/video – was inspired by AC/DC after Reed was travelling back from watching their concert in Berlin.  The lyrics inspired by those obsessed with seeking fame via social media.

Along with bands such as FM and Winger (who respectively never quite hit the big time or sustained their success “back in the day”), Dan Reed Network have found their own niche in the millennium;  an example that true talent (and decent back catalogue) eventually wins out especially if they can regenerate in near original form.  But, as previously alluded to,  I can’t help thinking that many revivalists are simply filling a creative void that exists with some modern rock music and younger bands.

‘Supernova’ reflects this dichotomy, the internet has been a great leveller but it’s not quite the same as an era when bands had to prove themselves to an A&R person and producer and then benefit from a budget and more widespread radio airplay.  Enduring anthems as well as careers were made as a result.

The quality of this band is such that the four opening tracks could have all been singles and garnered airplay back in their heyday.

Only the title track sits proud of much of the material.  The lyrics dominate, and originated in the late 1990s when Reed ran a night club, and rail against oppression and tyranny. Personal preference of course but I remain unconvinced by the use of radio announcer style voiceovers which are also used on several other tracks.

Fortunately we get back on track with a slow burner written by James ‘I See Angels’.  It has all the hallmarks of classic DRN.

‘Homegrown’ melds heavy riffs and electronica and there’s even a saxophone!  ‘Stumble’ reminds us that a late-1980s review described Dan Reed Network as a cross between Prince and Bon Jovi.

‘Just Might Get it’ is one of two Rob Daiker (keyboards) co-writes and sits well with the other, a bonus track on the CD, ‘Last Day On Saturn’.

‘Where’s The Revolution’ is a return to the band’s bump, grind and groove heyday whilst ‘Are You Ready’ and ‘Unfuck My World’ pile on the characteristic gut churning and insistent riffs.

The consistency of this 60 minute album is incredible, the messages all positive.  This is just what we need to restore a semblance of normality.  Take Dan Reed Network with you.  A guide perhaps but, indisputably, a damn good groove too.  ****1/2

Album review: EDGE OF FOREVER – Seminole

Frontiers [Release date 21.01.22]

Edge Of Forever’s mainman, Alessandro Del Vecchio’s description of the band’s fifth album is worth reading. You get the gist, but its over the top, disconnected language gives the impression it’s an outtake from Spinal Tap.

He explains the album was written by him, while, ahem… “looking through the eyes of a Seminole warrior”.

That said, once you absorb several pinches of salt, Del Vecchio clearly found the Native American culture inspirational. The music, the songs, the production, the performances are all rather good.

He’s now got Aldo Lonobile, the superb Italian guitarist who heads up the EU’s Power Metal poster boys, Secret Sphere in his team, along with Hardline’s drummer, Marco DeSalvia. It’s the European variant of Hard Rock Superheroes Assemble.

Throughout the album, the constituent pieces are perfectly judged. Openers ‘Get On Your Feet’ and ‘On The Other Side Of Pain’ are tight, solid mixes of hard rock writing and performance, dismissing any initial doubts we may have had. It’s as if pieces of a musical jigsaw puzzle have suddenly come together to create a complete picture.

Though Lonobile’s axework continually plays a leading role, it doesn’t have the angularity and fierceness of his power metal moments, but it generates no less excitement. DV has written some exhilarating choruses here.

The balladic ‘Breath Of Life’ and the Harem Scarem like ‘Shift The Paradigm’ are instilled with the confidence of a writer/producer who knows how to write a pulse quickening hook. When the pace is dropping, when the melodies are thinning out, and it all begins to get a bit derivative, he finds another layer to pull them back onto their feet and back on course again.

That said, he’s saddled a few songs – like ‘Made It Through’ and ‘The End’s Starting To Begin’ – with an uneasy balance of sentiment and introspection, but the band’s sheer enthusiasm for their subject matter is contagious, and almost always carries the day. The latter track is the last section of a four part “suite” that climaxes the album. It’s an ambitious piece that works more often than it doesn’t. ***1/2

Album review: HEAL & HARROW

Heal & Harrow - Rachel Newton & Lauren MacColl

Website [Release date 04.02.22]

Composer, singer and harpist Rachel Newton (The Shee, The Furrow Collective, Spell Songs) and fiddle player Lauren MacColl’s (Salt House, Rant) new project, Heal & Harrow, is a tribute to those persecuted during the Scottish Witch Trials. The 16th and 17th Century Scottish Witch Trials were one of the darkest periods of Scotland’s history, where an estimated 2,500 people were executed, 80% of which were thought to have been women.

Each piece of music is based on specially commissioned works by celebrated author Mairi Kidd – tales inspired by and in remembrance of real women who were persecuted and tried as witches, and characters from the folkloric tales and mythology enshrined in our oral culture.

‘Lilias’ opens the album, based on Lilias Addie the only person accused of witchcraft in Scotland with a known grave. From the first listen you can hear that Newton & MacColl have a string musical bond, each playing to their strengths, to create the moving and thought provoking music & lyrics on this album.

Other highlights include ‘Da Dim’, where MacColl’s fiddle playing takes centre stage, with more ethereal vocals from Newton. An interesting piece of music that mixes the traditional with a modern loop running through it. ‘Cutty Sark’, inspired by ‘Tam O’Shanter’ by Robbie Burns, is a lively instrumental as fiddle and harp combine beautifully.

‘Heal & Harrow’ is one of those albums that shines a light on a dark period of history, wonderfully told and played by Rachel Newton and Lauren MacColl. ***1/2

Album review: iVARDENSPHERE – Ragemaker

iVARDENSPHERE - Ragemaker

Metropolis Records [Release date 04.02.22]

Albums like this one are why, after nearly twenty years reviewing for GRTR!, my love of discovering and hearing new music shows no signs of waning. Not for everyone this one, as industrial-tribalist iVardenspehere weaves electronics with haunting vocals, textured orchestral pieces and percussive rhythms into a hypnotic and thoroughly enjoyable mix.

The theme of the album is one creating hymns to totemic gods of war & rebirth, and to unknown ancient goddesses of harvest & hunt, telling the tragic mythos of The Shattering Queen.

To create the soundscapes on here iVardenspehere used traditional percussion from all over the world including Taiko, Surdo, djembe and timpani. Further sounds were added from hammers and anvils, through to slamming doors, and many more weird and wonderful effects.

The vocals of Brittany Bindrim (I:Scintilla) fit perfectly onto the menacing ‘Varunastra’ – shades of Dead Can Dance meets ‘Mad Max’ on here. iVardenspehere brings in other guests from the industrial/electronica music fields including The Rain Within (who appears on the very eerie ‘Eastruun’) and Seeming.

The tribal drumming on ‘The Shattering Queen’ is simply breath-taking, showing that you can create heavy music without guitars!

The production on this album is excellent, Vangelis comes to mind in that it has a deep, rich sound and can appeal to listeners outside of the industrial & electronica genres.

‘Ragemaker’ is the soundtrack to a SF or near future film/TV series yet to be made, or a vampire movie. One that the listener can lose themselves in and imagine various future world(s). It is different but well worth the effort and listening experience, particularly if you enjoy Dead Can Dance or futuristic film soundtracks. ***1/2

Album review: JOHN MAYALL – The Sun Is Shining Down

John Mayall - The Sun Is Shining Down

Forty Below [Release date 28.01.22]

John Mayall’s 5th album for his producer Eric Corne’s Forty Below label may or may not be his 43rd in all, but it’s surprisingly good.

Surprising, because despite 6 guests and 3 covers it’s still very much a document of the veteran blues man’s own prowess,  from his songwriting, organ and harp playing, to his gritty vocal phrasing and an uncanny ability to pick guests for particular songs.

Above all, he retains the ability to draw us into a song with arrangements that percolate, groove, occasionally sparkle and always beguile.

This is particularly so on the single release of Bobby Rush’s ‘I’m As Good As Gone’, which is full of strong band interplay and guitarist Buddy Miller’s growling, dirt- sounding solo which brings a moody gravitas to the track.

Mayall is at his best when he revisits his own Laurel Canyon sound on ‘Deep Blue Sea’ (originally from his 1970 ‘USA Union’ album). He updates Sugarcane Harris’s electric violin contribution with the hugely impressive Scarlet Rivera.  And she dominates from the intro on a song given extra heft by a full rhythm section.

She also stars on ‘Got To Find A Better Way’, linking impressively with Mayall’s electric piano. Her solo is both deeply wrought and uplifting and gives the album as a whole a new dimension.

And when Mayall relies solely on his core band members, they step up to the plate on the sublime title track with an autobiographical feel: “Got a home in California and the sun is shining down.”

He further adds the defiant mission statement: “It’s been a long, long journey and I ain’t got time to quit.”

The beautifully crafted song features Mayall on organ and some intricate guitar work by his current Texan guitarist Carolyn Wonderland.

This is an album that flows purposefully like a slow river that is in no hurry to reach its destination. It’s also coloured by Mayall’s intuitive phrasing, his story telling ability and his willingness let a song breathe and focus on the grooves.

Eric Corne’s unobtrusive production nails the dynamics and polishes the solos to emphasize plenty of contrast, or as Mayall himself suggests “something unique.”

This is the case on the walking bass shuffle of ‘One Special Lady’ on which Jake Shimabukuro’s sharp toned ukulele cuts a swathe though Mayall’s layered organ and the mellifluous rhythm section of Greg Rzab, drummer Jay Davenport.

The subtle thread of dynamics at the core of the album continues with Melvin Taylor’s Chicago tinged aggressive lines on the stop-time shuffle “Hungry & Ready’ and his stinging attack on Roosevelt Sykes’s ‘Driving Wheel’.

By contrast, Marcus King offers a warm tone break well suited to the funky horn driven ‘Can’t Take No More’, while Mike Campbell dominates the funky Bernard Allison cover ‘Thrills & Chills’, though in truth it’s a reverential rather than inspired version.

‘The Sun is Shining Down’ is an updated snapshot of John Mayall’s continuing blues journey. He may have just announced his retirement from the road, but at 88 he’s still writing and crafting hand made blues of the highest order. ****

Album review: THE FERRYMEN – One More River To Cross

Frontiers [Release date: 21.01.21]

The Ferrymen are Magnus (Freefall/ Heart Healer) Karlsson, Ronnie (Lords Of Black/  Rainbow) Romero and Mike (Rage/ Axel Rudi Pell) Terrana.

One More River To Cross is their third album on Frontiers, and this is a much more considered affair. Yes, it can be categorised as Melodic Metal, but the band have shaken off much of the DIO/Primal Fear baggage that tended to weigh down the previous albums.

The competing tensions of power metal traditions versus the freedoms of a more melodic, open handed sound had run their course with on the trio’s previous recordings. And now, this new release is nudging the needle of the band’s stylistic compass toward a more personalised musical style.

The songwriting is sharper, more focused. The songs are in the image of this experienced, professional trio … each track arrives on time, does the job it’s paid for and gets out again.

The PR men talk of huge vocals, epic song structures, mind bending drumming, and… yes, all of the above are present and correct, but the trio have stepped back from the edge with One More River To Cross. There is restraint.

As with any kind of heavy metal variant, there is mood and there is emotion, but there’s precision here too, with the measured arrangements creating their own clearly delineated melodic metal landscape.

Each track is compact, punchy, melodic… Karlsson’s production is flawless. There’s a distinctive clarity of detail on ‘The Last Wave’ and ‘Morning Star’… the band’s seamless merge of guitars, keys, drums and voice resonates like a ringing bell.

Similarly his arrangements. On ‘One Word’ and ‘Shut It out’ the band seems liberated, having apparently abandoned the limiting structures of the heavy metal formula. And still, the music can be fiercely dramatic at times.

Standout tracks ‘One More River To Cross’, ‘The Last Ship’ and ‘The Passenger’ come in a glorious rush of amplitude and unhurried complexity. Like most new tracks here, they sound unshackled from the trio’s collective past in this setting. ****

Album review: DOM PRAG – Needle & Thread

DOM PRAG – Needle & Thread

Website [Release date 04.02.22]

Dom Prag has been steeped in the traditions of the classical guitar since childhood, then learning to play blues and composing songs of his own. He still plays in the classical style, however, his song writing has moved into folk, specifically songs in the storytelling style.

‘Needle & Thread’ is Dom Prag’s second album which was produced by Phil Beer, of Show Of Hands fame. Beer’s production experience certainly helps this album sonically as it highlights the vocals or instrumental passages at just the right times in a song.

His take on the traditional song, ‘The South Medomsley Strike’, is one of many stand outs. Vocally easy on the ear, yet with enough presence to maintain the listener’s interest. Folk music in particular has a great way of incorporating and preserving historical events, as this song does commemorating the miners’ strike of 1885. It even had me looking into this story further to see who the candy crew were. It transpires they were blackleg miners and their name originated when a local candy seller turned blackleg hirer in the early days of North East miners’ strikes.

Tommy Armstrong’s ‘Oakey Strike Evictions’ carries on in a similar vein with a jaunty melody. Not sure who plays the fiddle or adds the female backing vocals, but both add greatly to the song.

The wonderful instrumental ‘The Shoemender’s Tune/George Brabazon, First Air’ leads into ‘The Shoemender’, a look at how the town centres have changed and become a virtual wasteland, save for the ubiquitous Starbucks, nail salons and betting shops.

The title track is a beautiful piece that is both uplifting and thought provoking at the same time, dealing with mental health. His playing is pretty stunning on this one too. ‘Foster’s Mill’ is another one of his own compositions where he is joined by the vocal harmonies of Rowan Piggott and Rosie Hodgeson of The Wilderness Yet.

What a talent Dom Prag has. With the live scene returning, he can resume his live performances which have won him many a rave review. Remember the name as he is an artist on the up and up. Only January, yet this is already a contender for ‘Folk Album of the Year’. ****1/2

Album review: ERIC GALES – Crown

Eric Gales - Crown

Provogue [Release date 28.01.21]

Eric Gales opens his 21st album ‘Crown’ with a track called ‘Death Of Me’ with the open ended: “My name is Eric Gales, any questions?”

It’s a more ambivalent intro than you might at first imagine, for this superlative guitar player has never quite found his true career defining niche, until now.

So the real question is, which Eric Gales are we going to get here?

‘Crown’ suggests the former child prodigy has matured, being unafraid to dig deep into autobiographical songs, while his guitar playing always serves the song.

Where previously a melange of rock, blues, funk, gospel, R&B and psychedelia – with significant Hendrix influences – provided a backdrop for his scintillating fretwork, ‘Crown’ gives him a coherent identity, born of lyrical depth and well structured arrangements that facilitate the album’s flow from start to finish.

He taps into the post George Floyd world for his frisson and dips into his own experiences to reveal who he really is.

The album also focuses more on his warm vocal style which is well suited to songs that shift from the autobiographical to the observational, with occasional glimpses of his droll humour.

‘Crown’ is a career high, possibly because he’s sidelined his guitar playing metaphor – “a left-handed upside-down player in a “right-handed world” – to cut through the injustices of modern life and embrace the positives.

More significantly, his deeper moments of self analysis are sometimes given a more universal feel that we can all relate too.

‘You Don’t Know The Bluesfor example, rises from an opening audio collage and a tempo change into a cool groove with the uncompromising opening line: “If you ain’t been to jail, you don’t know the blues.”

However, he delineates his blues in a way we can all to relate too, from the tax man to relationships.

Deep into the album he pulls everything back to his autobiographical roots on luscious funk of ‘Let Me Start With This’, which serves a restatement of his own self affirmation.

It’s a near conclusion of a musical journey that opens with the kind of post Zeppelin bluster on ‘Death Of Me’ that could have come from one of co-producer’s Joe Bonamassa’s albums.

The difference is Gales warm vocal timbre, expressive phrasing and clarity of diction. The bluster gives a way to a drop-down with a spoken word rap and a dynamic guitar break full of poise, belated gritty wah-wah and a wall of sound that thunders on.

‘The Storm’ is better still.  It moves from an a cappella comment on racism – “How can you love what I do, but hate who I am” –  into a horn-led groove not far removed from Steely Dan, but peppered with gutsy guitar work that draws an exclamatory ‘woo’, ‘hey’ and guttural expressions from Eric, on a beautifully realised track that defines his oeuvre.

The slow soulful relationship blues ‘Stand Up’, counterweights musical restraint with gospel tinged bv’s with spiky lyrics before a surprisingly gentle slow fade robs us of a big finish.

In sharp contrast, both ‘Survivor’ and ‘Too Close To The Fire’ finds him at his most animated.

On the former he pours his vitriol into his playing and lyrics about a need for change, while ‘Too Close To The Fire’ is a more restrained piece that channels emotions though lovely accented guitar lines, as he uses fiery metaphors with allusions to the 1964 civil right murders in Mississippi.

Around the 5.16 mark his intricately woven guitar playing explodes into magical solo that eviscerates all that has gone before.

It’s venomous, emotional, and inspirational, with feverish wah-wah and gospel tinged bv’s that end up in the realms of Pink Floyd.

It’s also a brush with his subconscious that leads to lyrical flow and the kind of magisterial playing that effortlessly transcends genres.

And there, right at the centre of an album that teases us with 3 vignettes of his playing ability, is ‘I Want My Crown’, a showdown with Bonammassa on the album’s lead single.

It will surely draw many more listeners into an album that has even far more to offer than this intense smoking duel.

He shares the load with his wife LaDonna Gales  on “Take Me Just As I Am.”, which marks a makes a slight diversion into soulful funk, but there’s no denying the lyrical veracity or indeed the percolating horn/strings/guitar  backing track which arguably fades too quickly.

‘Crown’ marks Eric Gales ascent to his rightful place in the rock-blues pantheon. It has more depth and vision than his early career highlights such as ‘Crystal Vision’ and ‘The Psychedelic Underground’.

It also eclipses 2019’s acclaimed ‘The Book Ends’, being more song-driven, coherent and focused, while vindicating his decision to hook up with the Joe Bonamassa/Josh Smith guitar playing production team who know his strengths.

The result is a five star success. *****

Album review: PETER GOALBY – Easy With The Heartaches

PETER GOALBY – Easy With The Heartaches

Cherry Red Records [Release date 10.12.21]

Peter Goalby was the vocalist on a trio of albums released in the 80s by Uriah Heep – Abominog, Head First and Equator. After he left the band in 1986 little was heard from him after guesting on albums from the likes of Shy and John Parr. There was a series of songs recorded in a studio in Wolverhampton with keyboardist Paul Hodson and guitarist Eddy Morton. Robin George also co-wrote three songs and plays guitar on those.

Now, at long last, these songs finally get a proper release on this 11-track album personally overseen by Peter Goalby (from tape transfer, mastering and artwork).

The album starts off with the title track, one awash with guitar riffs and lashings of keys. Takes you right back in time to the 80s melodic hard rock from the likes of Shy, Robin George and Magnum. ‘I Found Real Love’ has a Foreigner feel to it and again plenty of glorious keyboard moments. As does the ballad ‘Take Another Look’, where you do think it is Lou Gramm singing at times.

‘Mona Lisa Smile’ will have Heep fans nodding along, whilst ‘Perfection’ would have given the US melodic rock giants Journey and Foreigner a run for their money. This one damn fine, catchy tune.

Touch of John Parr on ‘I Built This House’, a song which would have been a radio favourite back in the day. Another fantastic song on here and nicely polished to give it that classic 80s melodic rock sound.

All eleven songs feature strong melodies and hooks, any of which could have found their way on rock radio or covered by another artist. Plus of course you have the vocals of Peter Goalby, which really add that extra special something to the songs.

If you loved the Uriah Heep albums Peter Goalby appeared on and/or love 80s melodic rock, this album is a ‘must have’. Of its time certainly, but then good music never loses is appeal and luckily this is one of those ‘lost’ albums that has finally got the full release it deserves. ****1/2

Album review: OUT OF THIS WORLD – S/T

Out of This World

Atomic Fire Records (Release date 14.01.22)

Kee Marcello’s recording debut with Europe was 1988’s ‘Out of This World’ and I well remember how, celebrating 30 years of the album on a solo tour, the guitarist expressed his pride in the record- so much so that he has borrowed the album title for his new outfit.

Alongside long-time bassist Ken Sandin and drummer Darby Todd,  the last piece of the puzzle was Fair Warning singer Tommy Heart, resuming their partnership that saw the ‘Kee of Hearts’ album released in 2017. Though as an interesting curio, three songs in demo form with Kee singing are included as bonus tracks.

Opener ‘Twilight’ is smothered in parping keys throughout (possibly from Don Airey who makes a guest appearance) and boasts Tommy’s rough-edged slightly accented vocals and one of Kee’s fluid solos in which he bends those notes in  trademark elongated manner.  However at seven and a half minutes it is rather longer than it needs to be, and the verses have a rather incomplete to them. .

On ‘Hangin On’ a relatively weak verse is compensated for by a big chorus with a bank of soaring vocals that call to mind TNT and a great solo from Kee, albeit rather out of context with the song. But ‘In a Million Years’  is a real grower- reading that this was an unused Europe song from the early nineties makes sense, with a familiar lyrical theme of travelling into the future and Tommy’s superb vocals even sounding uncannily close to Joey Tempest.

The impression of the opening songs is that they have moments of quality but do not flow naturally- ‘Lighting up My Dark’, boasting good guitar solos, and ‘Staring at the Sun’,  with a Journey feel in places,  both have fine melodic choruses but feel a little disjointed in places, such as a vintage seventies synyth intro on the latter totally out of kilter with the rest of the song..

‘The Warrior’ is the most differently structured song on show, a fast-paced,  loose limbed number reminiscent of Van Halen and Mr Big with suitable widdling from Kee.

After that though we move firmly into the Scandi melodic rock mainstream with a closing quartet of songs that are quite simply glorious. ‘Up To You’ is the most melodic to date with the massed vocals soaring in almost symphonic fashion on the chorus, while ‘Ain’t Gonna Let You Go’  is a big anthem with a good hook on the chorus, keys and drums playing off each other and a Journey meets Europe vibe.

Then to end a mainly up tempo album with two ballads risks ending on a downbeat note but the quality of both justifies the track ordering. ‘Only You Can Teach Me How to Love’ has a lush feel with another big chorus with soaring vocals, reminding me of Tommy’s fellow countrymen Zeno; and ‘Not Tonight’ is a big scarf waver, slower but expressive with a particularly sweet solo from Kee.

Though the songwriting could be tighter in places, when they hit their stride this is an impressive collection of melodic rock anthems. As their moniker might suggest Out Of This World will appeal to those traditionalists who prefer the old-school Europe to the current incarnation of the band.  ****

JOE LYNN TURNER – Rescue You (Remaster)

Rock Candy Records [Release date 17.12.21]

1985, and the first of Joe Lynn Turner’s ten solo albums over the last 20 years, Rescue You, is released to huge acclaim.

He’s clearly decided to distance himself from the rock/metal approach of his band of the previous 5 years, Rainbow.

In fact a visiting alien who’s been brought up on a strict diet of Foreigner albums might be forgiven for thinking he (or indeed she) is listening to Lou Gramm here.

Opener ‘Losing You’ has that same confident timbre, a voice weighted with emotion, but not weighed down. Like Gramm, Turner possesses the same soaring, soulful delivery. And indeed, the song itself has that same pulsing urgency that reinforced many of Foreigner’s best tracks.

And funnily enough, all the songs on Rescue You are co-writes between Turner and one of Foreigner’s founding members, Al Greenwood, who played keyboards on the first 3 albums.

The title track, ‘Rescue You’ is in a similar vein to the opener. It summons up just enough melody to match Turner’s vocal intensity, on a quality song tuned to FM Radio. Greenwoods keyboards can be intrusive at times, but here they get the balance right.

‘Young Hearts’ and ‘Endlessly’ go off, if not tangentially, but at an acute angle into AOR territory. It’s Greenwood’s keyboards that do the heavy lifting, sending Turner’s voice skimming across the surface of these elegantly crafted romantic ditties. The latter was clearly aimed at radio, and to an extent it hit the target, rebounding off the Billboard Top 100 a few times, before falling back to earth.

Of the rest, only the rocky ‘On The Run’ measure up, mainly thanks to Bobby Messano’s skillfully turned axework, and Chuck Burgi’s thundering percussive thump, both pushing the music in the right direction. ‘Soul Searcher’ nearly gets there but is undone by the overuse of samples and programmed beats.

At times you can’t escape the feeling that it’s all a bit underdone, that what could have been so special needed a beefier production, but ultimately it suffers from a lack of enough truly memorable melodies. ***

Album review: SAXON – Carpe Diem

SAXON - Carpe Diem

Silver Lining [Release date 04.02.22]

Saxon, one of the world’s most consistent and reliable classic metal bands, a name synonymous with the New Wave Of British Heavy (NWoBHM); there were there at the start in the late 70s. Hits such as Wheels Of Steel and Princess Of The Night may have been 40 years ago, but Saxon have continued to produced a long run of strong metal albums, more consistently than any of their contemporaries.

The current line-up is the most stable the band have had, and they’re still rocking hard. Saxon have moved on from their NWoBHM roots and experimented with commercial metal and rock ’n’ roll, before coming full circle to the power metal they helped influence, and in the new millennium occasionally nodded to prog metal and symphonic too.

Covid may have put the spanner in many a works, with cancelled gigs aplenty, and while Saxon have had their own upheaval, they’ve remained busy, and this is their 23rd new studio album (24th if you include last year’s Inspirations covers album). And don’t forget vocalist Biff Byford’s solo album, and the Heavy Water album Biff recorded with his son Seb.

As vocalist Biff tells us: “I had the heart attack back in September 2019, so things went a bit pear-shaped for the band. And then Covid hit two or three months later, but luckily, we started writing and recording this album before Covid.

We did the drums in Germany and we did the guitars in various places. I was doing a lot of writing while I was in the hospital bed, and we spent quite a long time writing and arranging the ideas that we all had. I do think it’s a very intense album, and maybe some of that intensity comes from the frustration of not being able to do anything in the Covid period.

The new album’s title is Carpe Diem, literally translates as Seize The Day, which could have been the band’s motto since day one. And alongside Biff are guitarists Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt, bassist Nibs Carter and drummer Nigel Glockler.

Opening with the title track, there’s a building intro before Biff hits you like a sledgehammer and the band rip you apart with riffs.

‘Age Of Steam’ follows and is suitably heavy; some of the guitar work nods back to mid 80s classic rock, there’s a strong power metal overtone, and a tribal feel to the drums. As heavy as the lyrical theme.

Then there’s the stand out 6 minute ‘The Pilgrimage’. It’s a little slower, but solid, and there’s a hint of a progressive Crusader in the guitar feel. Some changes of feel throughout, and the guitar solo soars like an eagle that doesn’t want to land.

The pace is definitely taken up several gears for ‘Dambusters’, and it continues the historical lyrical themes. And some interesting guitar interplay halfway through.

‘Remember The Fallen’ is based around a familiar lyrical theme, another excellent track. There’s a nod to the early 80s in the guitar, but given a serious power metal bolster.

I love the idea behind ‘Super Nova’, a subject very few write about and this could accompany a Brian Cox lecture, it kicks off in power metal mode with a melodic break mid song, some excellent guitar work

The album’s closer is ‘Black Is The Night’, a slight anthemic hint, the rhythms and riffage memorable, and the pace changes keep it enthralling. An addictive chunky feel, this is a song I hope they play live.

The production, courtesy of Andy Sneap (Judas Priest) bolsters the album’s intensity, which was partly shaped by recent world events. Saxon not being able to tour? That’d do it.

Saxon never fail to deliver, and they’ve done it again. Now hopefully Covid will sod off as this is one album I want to see on the road.

The band have already started work on the follow up to the Inspirations set, and who knows when they’ll start work on their next Saxon album proper – Saxon are at the top of their game with a “bollocks to Covid” work ethic to boot. ****1/2

BETH HART – A Tribute To Led Zeppelin
