Album review: ESKINA – We Were The Moon

ESKINA - We Were The Moon

Challenge Records [Release date 19.11.21] www.eskinamusic.com

Has the music world gone all reflective?  Or maybe it is just a coincidence that in the past few weeks we have received several releases that seem to chime with the times.  Or maybe it’s just me, more receptive to the melancholic.

Whatever, Netherlands five-piece Eskina have fashioned another mournful soundtrack for our times.

Combining the reflective tones of cello (Berber Heerema) and viola (Kellen McDaniel) with sympathetic guitar (Merel Van Hoek) and occasional electronica courtesy of Maarten Vos.

I’ve seen Philip Glass and Radiohead bandied about as reference points.  Don’t let that put you off as frankly it isn’t really true.  This is simply wonderful instrumental music that retains an accessibility throughout.

It’s not all one-dimensional either.  ‘Maitri’ for example reveals an almost township vibe on guitar whilst bassist Joop De Graaf and drummer Mischa Porte keep things suitably pneumatic.

But this is about as animated as it gets because from ‘Setting Sun’ via the title track and ‘True Love Waits’ it’s all very introspective.  If you seek some refuge from the mainstream in terms of music, step right in.  And get those candles lit.  ****

Album review: BRITNY FOX – Britny Fox and Boys In Heat (Remasters)

Rock Candy Records [release date: 29.10.21]

Britny Fox’s first two albums at last get the hi-tech treatment from the UK’s reissue/ remastering specialists, Rock Candy Records .

Thirty years later it’s not easy to look behind the band’s glittery Glam Rock facade and see the music, but once you get past the played out “wouldn’t like to meet them on a bad hair day” jokes, you realise that this under publicised rock band really had something to offer.
Most of that came in the debut album, Britny Fox.

Given a leg up the Music label ladder by Tom Keifer’s band, Cinderella, then sharing their producer, John Jansen, the band released their self titled debut in 1988. It comprised ten typically loud, big chord, flamboyant pop metal songs.

Mainly thanks to Michael Kelly Smith’s sparkling axework and Dean Davidson’s sub Keifer vocalising, the album forced its way into the Billboard Top 50 album charts.

Among the handful of tracks that stood out, ‘Long Way From Love’, ‘Girlschool’ and ‘Save The Weak’ were all shiny, FM Radio friendly, major key foot stompers. Aural comfort food for LA’s Sunset Strip crowd and beyond. Surprisingly though, released as singles, they made little chart impact. ***1/2

The more uneven Boys In Heat followed a year later.
Helped on by Neil Kernon’s more expansive studio production, it still delivered some cracking melodic rock songs, showing more of a development and maturity in the sound, if not the lyrics.

‘Standing In The Shadows’ and ‘Living On A Dream’ are cut from the same cloth as the debut’s standout material. And ‘Dream On’s rich, pulsing melodic rock fastens on to the same crowd pleasing timbre regularly achieved by band’s like Canada’s Honeymoon Suite, where the music transcends its narrow genre limitations, and straddles the line between high calibre pop and rock.

Both remasters come with the usual suite of essays, colour photos and interviews. And most importantly, a sympathetically enhanced sound. ***

Quick plays: BREMER McCOY, L.SHANKAR, PINK FLOYD TRIBUTE, FREEDOM TO ROAM

BREMER McCOY Natten

BREMER McCOY Natten
Luaka Bop [Release date 29.10.21]

We all need some chill-out music, perhaps the more so as we enter the festive season.  A perfect antidote (and respite from socks, Scotch and smellies) could be found in the hands of two Danish musicians.

Pianist Morten McCoy and bassist Jonathan Bremer paint some appealing acoustic landscapes to soothe that furrowed brow. Where is  that f—g snow globe gin that I’d asked for?  It’s their fifth album following ‘Utopia’ in 2019.

In 1985 this would have been called “new age”.  Wistful piano over a largely acoustic bass, the album is wonderfully unobtrusive and provides a perfect backdrop to doing nothing.

Definitely an album to have on in the background of your imaginary Christmas get-together whilst contemplating your next booster jab.  ****

L.SHANKAR - Christmas From India

L.SHANKAR Christmas From India
Cleopatra Records [Release date 15.10.21]

We are told COVID is here to stay in increased or diminished form and the same could be said about musical Xmas pickings.  Every year produces a different variant.

We enjoyed L.Shankar’s last album and hoped that he would bring his world music grooves to bear on the Christmas offering.  What works best are his takes on more recent ditties like ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ and ‘Last Christmas.’  Applying his formula to the traditional songs doesn’t sound quite right.  ***

VARIOUS - Animals Reimagined: A Tribute to Pink Floyd

VARIOUS Animals Reimagined: A Tribute to Pink Floyd
Cleopatra Records [Release date 19.11.21]

The latest in what may be a series of Floyd tributes gives a celeb-fest take on the band’s 1977 album.  As with most of these collections, the main target audience is almost certainly fans of the participants.

So, for example, if you are a Graham Bonnet obsessive you will need to hear his version of ‘Dogs’ with Vinnie Moore and Jordan Rudess helping out.

James LaBrie fronts ‘Pigs (Three Different Ones’) with Al Di Meola, Joe Bouchard, Patrick Moraz and Billy Cobham for company.

The legendary Arthur Brown talks his way through ‘Sheep’ with accompaniment from Rick Wakeman and Jan Akkerman.  But really this track is a little shambolic, perhaps more so than the original.  The clue is in the album title: reimagined rather than regurgitated.

A couple of shorter tracks (‘Pigs On The Wing’ 1 and 2) feature Martin Barre and Albert Lee respectively.  Oh, and Billy Sherwood.  He’s here!!

‘Animals’ is not the most accessible of Floyd albums and there lies the issue. For real die-hards only.  ***

Album review (Still Wish You Were Here)

FREEDOM TO ROAM – The Rhythms Of Migration

FREEDOM TO ROAM – The Rhythms Of Migration

Goatskin Records [Release date 26.11.21]

This album is one element of a triptych, the two other components being a film documentary by multi-award-winning director Nicholas Jones and an album launch concert, hosted by, and in aid of, the Born Free Foundation.

The Freedom To Roam project is the brainchild of flautist Eliza Marshall (Ranagri), who has performed with the likes of The Divine Comedy, Paul McCartney, The Who and orchestras in a variety of shows including The Lion King, Les Misérables and Miss Saigon. In addition to Eliza’s own contributions on flutes, whistles and Indian bansuri, she is joined by Kuljit Bhamra MBE (tabla, electronic tanpura), Joby Burgess (percussion), bodhran from Evan Carson (bodhran), Catrin Finch (harp and piano), Robert Irvine (cello), Lydia Lowndes-Northcott (viola), Andrew Morgan (percussion, synth, producer), Dónal Rogers (bass, piano, percussion) and Jackie Shave (violin).

The music really does live up to the song titles, be it the dark, foreboding feel of ‘Brutal’ or the uplifting refrains of ‘Coming Home’. Each musician adds their own unique sound and style to the proceedings, with the constant, yet varied sound, of percussion providing a solid theme throughout the album.

A very worthy cause and piece of music that you really can immerse yourself in. The perfect antidote to today’s hectic lifestyle that will hopefully help you reconnect with the natural world. ***1/2

Album review: INSANIA – V Praeparatus Supervivet

Frontiers [Release date 12.11.21]

Few bands get back together after a 14 year breakup, but that’s what Sweden’s Power Metal band, Insania have done.

Twin vocalists, twin guitars, bubbling bass and ahhh… that double kick bass drum thump on the opening and title track, ‘Praeperatus Supervivet’ (Prepare to Survive), confirm that all the pieces are in place. They sound like they’ve never been away. But is that necessarily a good thing?

The music maybe sounds a bit too “squared away” now, no loose ends, no ragged edges, perhaps just not enough grit in the mix to give it real contemporary relevance.
That doesn’t mean the songwriting isn’t strong. In fact, this is as strong melodically as you’ll get in power metal.

‘Moonlight Shadows’ and ‘My Revelation’ are both finely drawn pieces of power metal song crafting. But much as we admire these songs, we’re looking hard for the stomping, stadium filling anthems that come with today’s Power Metal, that abrasive mix of colliding sounds, detonating beats and blazing heavy metal thunder.

‘Solur’, ‘Blood Tears and Agony’ and ‘Dragonborn’ come closest. As they speed off into the distance, vocalists, Ola Halen and Dmitri Keiski reach for those skyscraping heights we recall of Iron Maiden and Halloween, the bands that Insania covered in their youthful startup years.

Standing by their side, the twinned up guitars of Peter Ostros and Niklas Dahlin strike many attractive melodic poses, but spend most of their time accelerating through fast straights and negotiating hairpin bends, leading us into a land of hardbodied, combative power metal, brimful of solid mixes of power metal aggression.

More next time please. ***

Album review: PEPPERKID2 – Adventures In Pepperland

PEPPERKID2 – Adventures In Pepperland

Website [Release date 12.11.21]

Pepperkid2 is the brainchild of FM’s keyboardist Jem Davis. Joining Jem is Mike Dyer (Grand Slam) as the main vocalist/co-writer. Also appearing on the album is Dyer’s fellow Grand Slam band member guitarist Laurence Archer, along with Jem’s FM bandmates Jim Kirkpatrick and Steve Overland.

It certainly is a magical mix of musical styles, encompassing prog, power pop, rock, pop and that grandiose 70’s storytelling feel that the likes of 10CC, John Miles and latterly, Cats In Space, do so well.

“In the summer of 2020, during Lockdown,” Jem reflects, “I moved to a cottage near Lutterworth that came with amazing ready-built studio. Naming it ‘Electric Pepperland’, I immersed myself into my music, writing whatever inspired me. It soon became clear that there were many songs that didn’t fit the FM vibe and I needed to get them out there somehow, so under the guise of a project I called ‘Pepperkid2’ I set to work!”

As you’d expect from a solo album from a talented keyboardist there are plenty of solos to be enjoyed, from the progtastic one on ‘Finding My Way’ through to ‘Breath Of Life’, which features plenty of piano, keys and goes full on Pink Floyd halfway through. Laurence Archer rocks out on the single ‘After The Rain’, the heaviest moment on the album.

‘Behind The Glass’ is a beautiful piece of psychedelic pop whimsy, mixing Beatles and ELO influences to great effect. Steve Overland adds a soulful vocal to ‘Fools Lullaby’. His voice seems to be getting better with age, no mean feat as he’s always been one of my favourite singers. Lovely bit of piano on this song too.

‘Something Gotta Give’ has a topical lyric, plus a seasonal feel to it. A possible Christmas single release? Plenty going on in this one, including a children’s choir and like all the songs on here, listen carefully for the various sound effects and added sounds.

Don’t go expecting an FM sounding album like Steve Overland is often involved in. ‘Adventures In Pepperland’ is more down the diverse route and a proper solo album, in that it hardly sounds like his ‘day’ band. Jellyfish is the one artist that keeps coming to mind when listening to this album, more in the musical arrangements and harmonies than vocals, as Mike Dyer has a deeper, rockier singing vocal.

A very enjoyable album, not at all what I was expecting, and all the better for it. ****

Album review: ALAN PARSONS – The NeverEnding Show, Live In The Netherlands (DVD + 2CDs)

Frontiers [Release date 12.11.21]

Lets face it, Alan Parsons showed good judgement and exquisite taste by recording with legendary bands, Ambrosia and Pink Floyd (but not together, though that would have interesting), back in the seventies. He could probably have dined off that for the rest of his musical career.

Since then he’s had to make do with 12 US Billboard Top Forty albums, 5 of them making the Top Ten. And 11 Grammy nominations.

Frontiers signed him 3 years ago, releasing his “solo” album, The Secret, in 2019 (featuring Lou Gramm, Mark Mikel and Jason Mraz). Weeks later, Parsons recorded The NeverEnding Show live on stage in Utrecht, with regular sidemen, PJ Olsen, Todd Cooper, Jeff Kolman and others, only months before the Covid bug bit down hard.

Most live albums are a tour version of a band’s recent studio release, but only one of the tracks from The Secret is here. Instead, Parsons represents a significant body of work through twenty tracks plucked from the past and the present, delivered to us here on 2 CDs and a DVD. (plus a bonus, a theatrical new studio track, ‘The Neverending Show’).

That “Secret” track, ‘One Note Symphony’, referring to the resonant frequency of the Universe (the Schumann frequency), opens the concert. It’s eerily reflective of his work with ‘Floyd, a restrained rock symphony, tightly constructed, evenly layered. Unsurprisingly, Parsons gets the music mixed down with balance, clarity and oomph.

Audience feedback is enthusiastic, if polite. It’s almost as if they want to hear the music, wow! Of course, this was never going to be a raw, raucous, sweat dripping from the ceiling live gig.  It’s an all round poised performance from a tight band, who transport a patchwork quilt of musical pieces onto a highly visual aural landscape, with nary a hair out of place or a smudge on the music’s handsome countenance.

That means that even the more intimate pieces, like the funky pop of ‘Damned If I Do’, the sunkissed westcoast rock of ‘Don’t Answer Me’ (echoes of Ambrosia ringing loud), and perhaps too the Toto-ish ‘I Wouldn’t Want To Be Like You’ are all able to stake out a piece of a busy stage, and call it their own.

And so it goes. There are too many great songs to mention them all…the biggies, like ‘Games People Play’, ‘Time’ and ‘Eye In The Sky’ are all here. And the band’s delivery is faultless. Done live, these are twenty carefully fashioned slices of music carved out of a 20 (studio) album career spanning 45 years, all adding up to 120 minutes of great music, coming at us live, in Surround Sound and Dolby Stereo. ****

Album review: RADIO STARS – Broadcasting To The Nation

RADIO STARS

Easy Action [Release date 3.12.21]

Cherry Red’s superb 2017 “Thinking Inside The Box” set appeared to be the final word on Radio Stars, compiling both albums, singles/rarities and BBC sessions.  The emergence of an unreleased third album on Easy Action therefore comes as something of a surprise, having languished in a vault for 42 years!  It’s now being released ahead of Andy Ellison’s forthcoming autobiography.

With bass player and main songwriter Martin Gordon (ex-Sparks) having departed, Trevor White replaced him at Ellison’s request despite having never previously played bass!  The line-up was completed by guitarist Ian McLeod (his playing on this release is stunning) and the band’s original drummer Steve Parry.

The ten tracks intended for the album were recorded in a small eight track studio in Herne Bay.  Radio Stars were always a hard group to classify, with elements of glam, punk, new wave and power pop in their sound, and that continues to impressive effect on these recordings.

The album kicks off in style with the fiery ‘Back In Your Town’ – reprised at the end by the joyous ‘Back In Your Town Again’.  The infectious ‘Let’s Play Dirty’ is easily on a par with some of the band’s earlier tracks, as is the jaunty reggae-tinged ‘Wall Of Death’.  Album standout is the tour de force that is ‘Blame It On The Young’.

As well as the self-penned material, there’s also an almost proto-metal take on Marc Bolan’s ‘You Scare Me To Death’ (Ellison had worked with Bolan in the 60’s group John’s Children).  Sound quality throughout is excellent, with the tracks sounding as fresh and powerful as the day they were recorded.  This would have been a fine follow up to 1978’s “The Holiday Album” had it been released at the time.

To complement the studio recordings, there are eight additional tracks from a lively sounding London show in 1979.  Two of the new songs are given an airing – ‘Accident’ and ‘Wall Of Death’ – while the classic debut album “Songs For Swinging Lovers” is represented by ‘Good Personality’ and ‘Nice Girls’.  In addition, there are live versions of ‘Radio Stars’, ‘Horrible Breath’ and ‘Johnny Mekon’, along with a previously unrecorded track entitled ‘Understood’.

This is a fine addition to the Radio Stars’ legacy, and the 16-page booklet includes notes by Andy Ellison, along with archive images and memorabilia.  ****

Gig review: THE DEAD DAISIES – Shepherds Bush Empire, 10 November 2021

THE DEAD DAISIES- Shepherds Bush Empire, 10 November 2021

To quote the title of one of their songs, in many ways the Dead Daisies are ‘like no other’, even to the extent that they have been described as a collective rather than a band. Line ups have regularly changed, with the only constant founder, rhythm guitarist and Westfield heir David Lowy, with the result that they have never really developed a signature sound.

Then a couple of years back more than a few eyebrows were raised when Glenn Hughes, whose long career has featured an extremely distinctive style of his own, arrived as replacement for singer John Corabi and bassist Marco Mendoza.

THE DEAD DAISIES- Shepherds Bush Empire, 10 November 2021

None of this has stopped them building a decent sized following and though cut-price ticket offers and even a tube advertising campaign played a part, the downstairs of the Empire was as packed as I could remember for a long time.

It was an excellent three band bill with a healthy crowd already in place at 7pm for Grand Slam. Originally  Philip Lynott’s ill-fated post-Thin Lizzy outfit, they re-emerged just before the pandemic with a new line up and a mixture of new and resurrected material.

The great man looms large over their material- on opener ‘Gone Are The Days’ I thought founder member Laurence Archer was playing the melody to ‘Do Anything You Want To’, albeit with one guitar rather than two. There is also something Lynott-ish in Mike Dyer’s vocal phrasing. He was an excellent, expressive frontman, though as many of us men do when we proudly come up with a witticism, his cheeky ‘its great to be back in the bush’ double entendre was rather flogged to death.

Grand Slam

It was great to hear a couple of old Grand Slam songs that were later re-used as Lynott solo or Gary Moore material, in ‘19’ with its great introductory riff and the staccato beats of the affecting ‘Military Man’.  I was also struck how much Laurence reminded me of Michael Schenker in his fluent playing style, not to mention his baseball cap and flying V – hardly surprising then that he had a spell with UFO in the early nineties.

The title track of reunion album ‘Hit The Ground’ was very impressive, ‘Crazy’ not quite as much before a too short set ended with the old Grand Slam ‘epic’ ‘Sisters of Mercy’, boasting a very Emerald-like riff. It had me looking forward very much to their next headline set.

If Grand Slam still have novelty value,  the opposite is true of The Quireboys, touring constantly and seemingly on every festival bill. Indeed I’d seen both Spike solo and the band acoustically this year, but this was the full band experience.

Quireboys

Coming on after an extremely rapid changeover, from the moment Spike cheerily waved a pint in the air, there were mass singalongs to ‘Misled’ and ‘Man On The Loose’, then Keith Weir’s piano intro led into ‘Long Time Coming’, and there was a great atmosphere, even though Spike’s vocals would not have withstood close scrutiny.

Though  a recording band to this day, an indicator of how enjoyable a Quireboys set is measured by how much of it comes from their ‘Little Bit Of What You Fancy’ debut. By the time of ‘Whipping Boy’, where the band created some great atmospherics, it was clear the whole set would be taken from the album, loosely and belatedly celebrating its 30th birthday last year.

Quireboys

Drinks were spilled and fists punched to the twin favourites ‘Hey You’ and ‘There She Goes Again’, both sporting slide work from Guy Griffin. Indeed the guitarist with newly slicked back hair was extremely impressive in his understated style, none more so than on ‘I Don’t Love You Anymore’.

After finishing with further raucous sing-alongs to ‘Sweet Mary Ann’ and their biggest hit, the latter’s lyric ‘its 7 o’clock, time for a party’ was, with a bit of artistic licence on the timing, completely apposite. I should be over familiar and jaded with this material, and yet this was the most fun 40 minutes I’ve had in a long time.

THE DEAD DAISIES- Shepherds Bush Empire, 10 November 2021

When the Dead Daisies came on to a rapturous reception and with a flawless light and stage show,  the musical dynamic was very different. The aggressive approach of Doug Aldrich on guitar and drummer Tommy Clufetos, allied to Glenn Hughes’ bass, made for an uncompromisingly heavy sound, albeit one lacking subtlety.

With the possible exception of his collaborations with Tony Iommi, it was certainly the heaviest thing Glenn Hughes has been involved with and fans of his soul and funk leanings would have searched in vain for those influences. At 70, the ‘Voice of Rock’ seems somehow ageless with his rock star’s hair, crimson jacket and strides and charisma.

Their material was mainly from recent album ‘Holy Ground’ but with a few from  its predecessor  ‘Burn  It Down’.  The opening songs which included ‘Unspoken’, ‘Rise Up’ and ‘Dead And Gone’- the latter almost the only one where David Lowy got a look-in on lead guitar – were a little samey and merged into one another.

THE DEAD DAISIES- Shepherds Bush Empire, 10 November 2021

Glenn has such a distinctive style and generally only songs his own songs in concert so it was a little odd to hear him lending his voice to older Dead Daisies favourites like ‘Mexico’ and the bluesy ‘Lock And Load’.  Cover versions have always been a feature of the Daisies repertoire, though this time they restricted themselves to a couple,  one after the other,  in a furious ‘Fortunate Son’ and ‘Midnight Moses’, the ‘hey, hey hey hey’ chant tailor made for enthusiastic participation.

It would be a wasted opportunity for this band not to turn their hand to Purple classics, and ‘Mistreated’, apparently brought into the set since the start of the tour, had an epic feel with Glenn’s trademark screams and Doug whipping up quite the storm on guitar, as he had a few years back when in Glenn’s band.

THE DEAD DAISIES- Shepherds Bush Empire, 10 November 2021

‘My Fate’ and ‘Leave Me Alone’ became increasingly heavy, but for me they saved the best new material till last with a trio of ‘Saving Grace’, ‘Like No Other’ with some audience participation, and the title track of ‘Holy Ground’ which is the new song with most staying power that I found lodged in my brain after the show.

There were a pair of encores to complete an hour and 40 minute set:  ‘Long Way To Go’ seems established as a firm Daisies fan favourite, but to close there could really only be one song, a no holds barred ‘Burn’ with Doug playing with fire and fury to compensate for the absence of keyboards.

THE DEAD DAISIES- Shepherds Bush Empire, 10 November 2021

An abiding memory of the night was David Lowy’s evident pride as he introduced Glenn Hughes, seemingly unable to believe his fortune at persuading such a legendary name to join his labour of love. Glenn in turn seemed keen to convey that this was just the start of bigger plans with this line up. The crowd reaction this night suggested this new chapter in the Daisies mercurial career may be the best yet.

Album review: TRAGIK – Ultima Ratio

TRAGIK – Ultima Ratio

Rock Company [Release date 10.11.21]

By my reckoning this is album number eleven by Tragik, who still feature Damian D’Ercole (Guitars, Percussion), Dirk Phillips (Drums, Keyboards) and Phil Vincent (Vocals, Bass, Keyboards).

‘Hunter’ and ‘Wet Dog’ (contender for Worst Song Title of the Year!) certainly kick the album off in style. Hard rocking riffs and those instant on the ears choruses that Tragik are so good at. ‘The Last Resort’ is a chance for a guitar wig out with Phil Vincent chanting ‘This the last resort’ over the music. Sequencing wise perhaps better at the end of the album, as the song that follows it, ‘Out On Limb’ carries on from the opening duo.

Back in the day ‘Seeds In The Sky’ would have been a single. Again with its instant chorus and riffs aplenty it would have been a good one for rock clubs. ‘All I Have Left’ slows the pace down allowing Phil Vincent a chance to show the emotional side of his singing.

‘Requiem’ enters prog rock territory time wise, clocking in at over eight minutes. It is one of those classic slow builders of a tune, climaxing in a flurry of guitar and keys. Tragik do Meat Loaf!

Outside of his solo releases, Tragik is the most melodic rock sounding and certainly where I’d recommend a new listener to Phil Vincent’s extensive catalogue of music to start. In fact this album is as good as any place to start and existing fans of his work & Tragik will find much to enjoy on ‘Utlima Ratio’. ***1/2

Album review: COLIN JAMES – Open Road

Stony Plain Records [Release date 05.11.21]

Since releasing his debut album in 1988 Colin James has been a stalwart of the blues scene, with trips into swing and rock ‘n’ roll with his Little Big Band and on this, his twentieth album, adding a little more of Americana to his sound.

In addition to his own studio offerings, Colin James has worked with some of the world’s most revered artists including Bonnie Raitt, Albert Collins, Robert Cray, Albert King, Keith Richards, Lenny Kravitz, ZZ Top, Mavis Staples, Carlos Santana, Little Feat and many more.

On ‘Open Road’ he is joined by drummer, Geoff Hicks, bassist Norm Fisher and Simon Kendall on B3 and Clavinet.

It is a cover heavy album, with the opening run through Tony Joe White’s ‘As The Crow Flies’, the harmonica/guitar trade off on Otis Rush’s ‘It Takes Time’ and the rollicking version of Bob Dylan’s ‘It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry’, the stand outs.

Of his own co-writes the title track and ‘Raging River’, have an emphasis on gentle blues meets heartland America. The latter you could easily imagine Bruce Springsteen covering and enjoying. The rock ‘n’ roll of ‘Leave This House; is great fun, with a smoking guitar solo and Jess O’Brien laying down some boogie-woogie piano.

Colin James is one of the most consistent, in terms of musical quality, and enjoyable blues artists around today. ‘Open Road’ further enhances his reputation. ****

Album review : BARRIE JAMES – Strange Desire

Vacancy Records [release date 12.11.21]

Strange Desire is the third solo album from Glasgow’s ex Kassidy frontman, Barrie James O’Neil (now minus the surname).

Barrie decamped to LA in 2016, motivated by the usual young-artist-seeks-wealth-and-fame ambition. A handful of years later he’s on his third solo album, having romanced Lana Del Rey for several solid years (now split) and written four songs on her new album. So, he’s doing okay.

En route, he’s kind of invented a new genre. ‘Strange Desire’ is the fulfilment of his ambitions, Melancholy Melodic Rock leavened here and there with Alternative Country. Ashley Campbell’s sweet harmonising, tuned to the rude strum of acoustic guitars and fiddles on ‘Country 33′, along with the head turning swingbeats of ‘Emerald Girl’ add a veneer of radio friendly listening to the mix.

For the most part though, the album is a meditative, brooding series of songs.
The first single and opening track, ‘An Angry Man’ and the title song ‘Strange Desire’ act as our guide as we make our way through the 13 tracks.
Both are emotionally resonant studies of lost love and the nature of attraction, hauntingly ethereal yet deeply melancholic, they become the album’s benchmarks.

He backs up this songwriting strength with the dark and dramatic ballad, ‘Bad Girl’, a song that seems to flit between romance and depression, and ‘Solid Rose’, a track that starts off unconventionally, then moves through several variations creating whatever mood suits the lyrical moment. It’s reminiscent of the mock operatic grandeur of a Jeff Buckley original.

James clearly knows that he delivers with a detached cool that will not meet with universal acclaim, but the guy’s songcraft is undeniable, and it is often as if he’s exploring the range of his ambition, within the limits of a commercially appealing production. Doesn’t always hit the target, but it’s never off by much.

At least he has the nous to tack on a duet with Lana Del Rey at the end of the album. It has the same downbeat musical architecture as Del Rey’s best stuff, and fits perfectly with James’ emotionally intimate solo material. ***1/2

Album review: SETH LAKEMAN – Make Your Mark

SETH LAKEMAN – Make Your Mark

BMG [Release date 19.11.21]

Seth Lakeman’s eleventh album, and his follow-up to 2020’s Mayflower-themed A Pilgrim’s Tale, was conceived during lockdown when, like countless other singer-songwriters the world over, he used the down-time from live performance to ponder the meaning of life, the universe and everything and come up with some new songs.

“The pandemic gave me a real determination to come out musically stronger and I really dug deep into myself for this album,” says Lakeman. “Being able to record and play with the band again was really quite spiritual.”

The result is Make Your Mark. Unlike its highly conceptual predecessor it tackles a range of themes, inspired by Lakeman’s own thoughts and feelings about the state of the world, love, life and death as well as the stories and landscapes of his West Country surroundings. Lakeman has spoken of this latest release as being a kind of sister album to his 2006 release Freedom Fields. The latter celebrates its fifteenth anniversary this year and the set-list for Lakeman’s current tour has focused on both songs from Freedom Fields and from this new album.

Musically, Make Your Mark is exactly what you would expect and hope for from a new Seth Lakeman album: fourteen thought-provoking yet accessible songs, all delivered in Lakeman’s unique trademark style.

Long-time musical collaborator, Ben Nicholls, joins him once more on this album with some deliciously dark, brooding superbly intense double bass playing, as does former Bellowhead and current Steeleye Span instrumentalist, Benji Kirkpatrick, who, once again, adds his distinctive banjo, bouzouki and mandolin playing.

The album is not a leap into the dark musically but from his early days as ‘the poster boy of English folk’ through to now, Seth Lakeman’s albums have demonstrated a quality and consistency in delivering fine folk songs, superb musicianship and those instantly-recognisable vocals. Fans will not be disappointed. ***1/2

Album review: RICHARD TOWNEND & THE MIGHTY BOSSCATS – Short Stories

Pete Feenstra chatted to Richard Townend for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast 28 November 2021.

Richard Townend & The Mighty Boss Cats - Short Stories

Self Release [Release date 21.10.21]

There’s a lovely song on Richard Townend’s new ‘Short Stories’ album called ‘Everyman’. It’s a punchy track full of vibrant New Orleans influenced piano, nifty picking, a dreamy organ and a simple, but significant lyric;  “Everyman’s got a song’, before he concludes: ‘I am an everyman’.

And in his role as a song-driven social observer and teller of tales, Townend is a repository of hundreds of such tales, 13 of which make up this delightful album.

He has an eye for emotional detail that he weaves into a tapestry of narratives that shift from the observational to the questioning. He rarely preaches, though frequently finds room for a significant message, as on the ragtime and Leon Redbone influenced ‘Listen Up A Little’.

“So always consider, these words of a fool, cause they got the scars, made the mistakes for you.”

He strikes the perfect balance between thoughtful words, lingering melodies and inspired band interplay.

The Mighty Bosscats line-up comprises well chosen guests who bring additional colours to his musical palette.  Russian pianist of Anton Ilyin is a revelation in his choice of styles ranging from pregnant one note motifs to variety of styles, while Dennis Nazaroff and Marcus Cliff (Mark Knopfler and Manfred Mann)  share the bass parts alongside  David Flanagan on double bass.

Drummer /percussionist and co-producer David Booth’s subtle drive glues together Townend’s intricately woven guitar parts and nuanced bv’s as part of a layered ensemble sound given a sonic sheen which makes the songs sparkle.

Richard Townend makes the best of his own limited vocal range by cleverly fattening choruses or occasionally just the one line with a vocal block.

He also varies his own vocal attack, from an unflinching nasal tenor to a more JJ Cale style whisper. Just like his delicate guitar work, his vocals always serve the song at hand.

And ultimately songs are what this wordsmith is all about. He’s driven by a mix of passion, emotion and an innate ability to get inside the minutiae of everyday life.

This extends to the altogether more difficult challenge of writing about a mass shooting as on the poignantly observed ’Parkland’.

Its rumination on a mass high school shooting and the results of lack of gun control, but written in a way that never panders to clichéd politics.  He sets out the emotional impact in a community, on a beautiful arrangement with gospel bv’s and an ethereal climactic solo over portentous drums.

By the time his last tremulous note fades into the ether as he’s made his point both lyrically and musically, leaving the listener to make their own obvious value judgement.

‘Short Stories’ is an album with a lyrical aesthetic, illustrated by his choice of old school type writers on the cover and inner sleeve, which perhaps alludes to the painstaking craft that has gone into his lyrics.

He opens in a more general vein with ‘Got To Pay Your Dues’, which could almost be a mission statement for who he is. It benefits from lovely languid feel, with delicate double tracked guitars, pulsating drum work and thoughtful lyrics.

He seems to have made his point on the chorus: “Some people listen, some people don’t. They say what you give you get back as your own, Got to pay your dues.”

But he uncovers a denouement as some ethereal slide guitar leads him to the closing couplet: “All the work and struggles, sleepless nights and falls, Will pay back in dividends when you least expect the call,” complete with an unexpected, but worthy shuffle drum outro.

They say you should always open with your best card, and Townend does so by making a statement about his own life long commitment to music that has something to say.

His stories consistently engage us. There’s barely a wasted word or redundant note in a superbly crafted album that feels as if his previous 12 albums have naturally brought him to this point.

Listen for example, to the title track which is a lovely exposition of who he is: “I know it’ll never be one of those fancy best sellers, But if it has a happy ending I’m ok with that.”

It’s his search for meaning, his exploration of emotions and the resulting magical confluence of words and melody that makes this track special. It also gives him the ability to achieve his goal, which he tells us is: “I want to write a story which touches your heart.”

And it’s not just his ability to tell stories, but also the fact he is able to lead us to such wide variety of tales over 13 songs which flow from beginning to end to evoke the chapters he sings about.

For example, while both ‘The Painter’ and the closing ‘You Are Amazing’ are love songs, he branches out into eco concerns  on ‘The Stupidity Of Man’, adding a whispered vocal to help draw us into his heartfelt lyrics delivered over a drifting piano line.

On ‘Rambling Radio’ he uses a lovely swampy groove on another lyrically adroit piece, full of tremolo guitar, soothing bv’s , and Knopfler style sinewy guitar as he delivers an almost weary but flinty denunciation of the mainstream media:  “There’re always three sides to a good story, Your side and their side and the side of truth.”

This track alone shows there’s plenty of room for combining a subtle groove, nuanced vocals and inspired playing.

He arguably reaches a musical peak on ‘Rolling Bye’, on a great example of his wistful style that draws on his subconscious to magically coalesce memory, music and songcraft on a melody that offers us a subliminal reminder of JJ Cale’s ‘Magnolia’.

‘Short Stories’ is shot through with the kind of honesty, passion and a characteristic lightness of touch that has given Richard Townend his enduring presence in the blues and roots rock market.

The deeper you dig into this album, the more you uncover. It’s beguiling musical journey full of meaningful songs, lyrical depth, consistently great guitar playing and comes unreservedly recommended. ****

Gig review: GARY FLETCHER BAND – Arlington Arts Centre, Thursday 11 November 2021

Pete Feenstra chatted to Gary Fletcher for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast 22 March 2020.

Back to the wilds of the Oxfordshire countryside for my second visit, and indeed second indoor gig of the year, to the Arlington Arts Centre. Tonight’s draw was the Gary Fletcher Band, who fellow GRTR! scribe Andy Nathan wrote glowing review of the gig back in October 2020 where Gary Fletcher was performing with guitarist Nick Ritchie (Mud).

The Gary Fletcher Band line-up was the aforementioned Nick Ritchie, along with Alan Glen (Nine Below Zero) on harmonica, Tom Leary (Lindisfarne) on violin, Blues Band’s Dave Kelly’s son Sam Kelly on drums and bassist Andy Billups.

The set featured almost all of his recent album ‘River Keeps Flowing’, which GRTR!’s Pete Feenstra enthused about in his album review - ”‘River Keeps Flowing’ is an excellent album that brings fresh reward with repeated listens.” Unfortunately like many artists he was merrily touring and selling his new album in early 2020 before the pandemic hit, which meant a long gap from live shows and now he is back touring the album again.

The music is a lovely mix of Americana and blues with a little bit of folk, mainly from the wonderful violin of Tom Leary. ‘No Shadow On The Wall’ and ‘Back To Your Heart’ were standouts in the first set. Nick Ritchie is a fine lead guitarist, never overegging his solos and seemingly at ease doing blues or more countrified solos.

Their version of ‘Nobody’s Fault But Mine’ was worth the admission price alone. Slow and bluesy, with Alan Glen playing his harmonica like his life depended on it. With his little case of harmonicas he certainly had the easiest load-out of the band.

After the interval (which some of the audience came back late having seemingly enjoyed the bar a bit too much!) we were treated to more off the new album. ‘Jacob Burkle’, who used his house as a way station on the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves. It is one of those type of songs I personally love that relate a true story through the power of lyric and song.

‘Don’t You Come Creeping’ gets the old feet tapping away and like much of the set puts me in mind of Dire Straits and 90′s era Robert Plant.

‘You Can, You Can’ gave a chance for Andy Billups and Sam Kelly to be in the limelight trading bass and drum solos. The song itself was one of the more rocking numbers of the set. Just shows what talent this band possesses and how lucky we are that artists like this still love playing live, even to a select crowd.

The set closed with the Blues Band favourite ‘Greenstuff’, written by Gary and one that got the audience clapping along to. To be fair I was one of the youngest at the gig, not normally the case these days!

The gentle and autobiographical ‘That’s My Way’ was the final number of the night, with Gary joined by Alan Glen.

As the gig scene starts to get back on track it does seem that for many shows the audiences are still cautious coming out, as tonight’s audience was suitably socially distanced as Gary Fletcher joked from the stage early on in the evening. If he appears locally to you, in either solo or band format, get along to see him as you are in for a night of supreme musicianship and a damn fine night of live music.

Gig review: HARD ROCK HELL XIV, Great Yarmouth, 4-6 November 2021

Bastette - HARD ROCK HELL XIV, Great Yarmouth, 4-6 November 2021

37 bands – 2 stages

Friday 5 November

This festival is a new experience for me and what an utterly joyous experience it was too from the get go, arrival was smooth, the venue is really easy to navigate round, the facilities were kept to a good standard of cleanliness given the volume of traffic,  all the security staff were friendly and polite, and the weekend crew working in all the bars/food outlets were excellent – couldn’t fault them.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t get to HRH14 for Thursday night so my plan was to try and get round as many of the newer bands as I could on Days 2 and 3 but take advantage of some of the more familiar acts too – what a treat!

Bastette - HARD ROCK HELL XIV, Great Yarmouth, 4-6 November 2021

Friday’s line up for me started with the rather awesome Bastette on the main stage – they were on fire, and the place soon filled up as the band let rip and Caroline worked her magic on stage opening with ‘Talk About It’ and cracking through a packed set demonstrating their originality and range as well as including a cheeky Pink cover ‘Just Like a Pil’, this young band have it all, catch them before they start playing much bigger venues – you won’t be disappointed.

Followed by Yikes who were tight as a band but the vocals let them down, I decided to switch to Stage 2, catching the tail end of Gallows Circus, all I can say is I wish I could have heard their full live set if ‘Hell’s Whiskey’ is anything to go by – I will be checking you out at future gig.

FyreSky - HARD ROCK HELL XIV, Great Yarmouth, 4-6 November 202

FyreSky started and Stage 2 filled up, with security having to turn people away, this set was a long time coming for this band and they were thoroughly enjoying themselves as were the crowd, chuck in the Time Warp and the crowd response was incredible – check them out if you haven’t already. Stand out set including ‘Star Chaser’, ‘Pleasure for Pain’ and ‘Toxic’.

Jimmy B and the Death Rattles were a joy to behold, tight, fun, funky set a complete change from, the band before, and less heavy more gravelly JD, rock –another excellent set, highlights ‘On my TV’, ‘We are Fire’ and ‘Monkey Head’.

Swedish rockers, Eternal Fear were next up, and did we know the Vikings had arrived from their opening track, ‘Post War Dream’ accomplished frantic guitars, heavy drums, that got a few pulses racing – most will have heard ‘Dream Stealer’ but stand out tracks for me were ‘Halls of Odin’ and ‘The Other Side’ – this is Viking metal and it rocks!

The Headliner on Stage 2 was The Fallen State, a band that have relatively recently changed their lead singer and recently completely there first tour with this line up – the band were in fine form, opening with ‘Knives’ swiftly followed by ‘For my Sorrow’ and their packed set managed to  incorporate their latest release ‘Standing Tall’  and the crowd pleasers of ‘Attitude’ and ‘Burn It To The Ground’ -  they were given a warm and rousing welcome by the crowd; what a way to complete Stage 2 for the day! The Fallen State are clearly going places – catch them on tour supporting Stone Broken in 2022, I will be.

The timing meant I could pop across to Stage 1 to catch the rest of Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons’ set – they were on great form as you’d expect, rapturous crowd and tight delivery, so glad I caught the last few songs – how on earth is Saturday going to top day 2?

 Saturday 6 November

Saturday started with a vow to drink slightly less (ahem) … first band up for the day was Sons of Liberty, who got proceedings off to a great start with a tight set and demonstrated just why they are still relevant today, cracking start to proceedings on the Main Stage!

Lords Of Ruin - HARD ROCK HELL XIV, Great Yarmouth, 4-6 November 2021

Next up on Stage 2 was Lords of Ruin, I’ve waited a long time to see this band perform live and they completely exceeded mine and a lot of other people’s expectations as the arena was stacked out for their set after the initial song, ‘What’s Left’.

Demonstrating their full range and potential (and what potential), from ‘In From The Cold’ to the almost ballad like ‘Walk The Line’, the tight musicianship, blissful heavy set showcased the meaning of pure versality in the Metal genre, this band are going places and I for one, can’t wait. Absolutely, the standout set of the festival for me – on fire, you would not have known that this band hadn’t played for almost 2 years. Let’s hope they return to a future HRH.

Ryders Creed - HARD ROCK HELL XIV, Great Yarmouth, 4-6 November 2021

Back to the Main Stage to see Ryders Creed, they are surely on their way up, this band are so tight, opening with ‘Memories’ this is a master class of what NWOCR is all about, young bands coming through with huge talent and potential. Ryan, showing his compassion for what all of us have gone through without our live music fix in the last 2 years and delivering the poignant, heartfelt ‘Believer’, that moved the audience to tears (It is ok, not to be ok) as it struck so many chords. Closing out with ‘My Life’ this was band that deserved an encore – let’s see where you go next, I’ll be watching.

Piston - HARD ROCK HELL XIV, Great Yarmouth, 4-6 November 2021

Fourth band of the day was the awesome Piston – Standing front and centre on the rail for Piston was like a walk back to a time when rock was pure rock’n’roll, from the frontman, Rob (even with hairball throat, can of lager seemed to sort that out LOL), the stunning guitar work, to the  insane drummer who can only be described as ‘animal’, I loved this set, I’ll confess I had a complete fangirl moment when Rob removed his top – band crush of the weekend. Highlights ‘Leave if You Dare’, ‘Rainmaker’ and the fun cover of ‘Proud Mary’.

I swop back to Stage 2 to see the False Hearts – this band rock and with Emma at the helm there’s no stopping them, powerful vocals and guitar skills finely demonstrated to a busy crowd, and totally complimented by the rest of the band. A captivating set, I think you have gained some new followers today, I love how people embrace the newer bands as well as the more established. This is a band to check out if you haven’t come across them already. Highlights track wise ‘Misery’, ‘Remedy’ and ‘Breathe Again’.

Due to a pitstop to eat, drink and chat with the HRH family, I caught the tail end of Mercury Rising’s set – suffice it to say I need to hear and see more – sorry I missed the majority, but I will catch you again!

The Darker My Horizon - HARD ROCK HELL XIV, Great Yarmouth, 4-6 November 2021

Headliner for Stage 2 was The Darker My Horizon, this band never seem to quite get the recognition they deserve but that changed Saturday night, with security again having to turn people away from Stage 2, TDMH attracted new fans to their enigmatic set, from the get-go of ‘Functional Dysfunctional’ then band were on the finest form I have seen them.

Mark Stephenson on lead guitar plays like a man possessed, the relatively new drummer, Russ has come into his own and Paul Hamilton aka the Neon Warrior (if you know, you know) on bass provides all the rhythm they need – the crowd are engaged, and the banter is flying.

Paul Stead’s vocal range is on display from ‘No Super Hero’ to ‘Perfect’ to the perfect poignancy of ‘Dear Olivia’ as we run up to Remembrance Day, I am watching this with military family, we raise a glass to the fallen and mark our respect. Culminating their epic set with ‘Still Alive’ the whole crowd are bouncing and spirits are high. What a headliner, here’s to next time.

Special mention has to be made for Orange Goblin, Saturday night Stage One Headliners, who were totally immersed in their set when something went wrong in the mosh pit and one of the audience was injured after falling; all credit to the band they spotted it immediately and stopped the set, with security and first aid immediately on hand.

Rock family are always respectful and there was no debate as the room was cleared to allow the experts to take cover the care of the gent involved – after treatment had been delivered, and the band knew the person concerned was going to be ok, the band came back and played 3 songs to complete their set to approximately 30 hardcore fans who had stuck around. Fair play to all concerned, no-one would have batted an eyelid if the band had decided not to come back on, despite a rather disrupted set, the headliner pulled it off and were as heavy rock as ever.

Special mention 2 to The Darker My Horizon who not only did their planned acoustic set on Friday but stepped in last minute on Saturday morning to cover for not one, but two bands acoustic sets and then carried onto headline Stage 2 – legend status continues.

A thanks has to go to Lords of Ruin, who created a playlist with 2 tracks for every band on the bill and shared it ahead of the event – that takes effort and time, it was something I had been intending to do myself but hadn’t got round to. Thank you, Dox, you made my journey to Great Yarmouth fly by!

A few too many beers may have been imbibed over the weekend by a fair few of us, it is fair to say that the HRH family certainly know how to party and then some! What a great atmosphere, what a phenomenal line up, we have all collectively waited a long time for this to happen and there was definitely a sense of making up for lost time, seeing reunions of HRH regulars, making new friends, catching up with old friends seen and plans for HRH 2022 in hand already – I’ll be back :0)

EP review: THE SMOKING PISTOLS – Sip It For Free

THE SMOKING PISTOLS – Sip It For Free

Bandcamp [Release date 26.09.21] Doux Mantra Records

The Smoking Pistols are a four piece garage punk meets rock ‘n roll band hailing from France, consisting of El Tat (guitar & vocals), Zack (guitars), Call (bass) and Bone (drums). El Tat and Zack share songwriting duties between themselves.

This five song EP has some good raw edged tunes like ‘Cut Some Slack’, which recalls early 80s punk acts, whilst ‘Glass of Patience’ has a hint of the Pixies about it. ‘Sip It For Free’ is the most instant on the ears with this one recalling the 80s output of the Stranglers. The six minutes plus of ‘Isolation’ is perhaps a bit too long for the garage punk vibe the band produce elsewhere on ther EP.

By no means essential, the Smoking Pistols do have something about them and certainly worth a listen if you’ve a penchant for garage punk/rock ‘n’ roll. ***

Gig review: MARTIN TURNER- Boom Boom Club, Sutton, 5 November 2021

MARTIN TURNER- Boom Boom Club, Sutton, 5 November 2021

I must admit that the longer the pandemic went on, the more I began to fear that many of the acts from rock’s original golden era who we are lucky enough to still see performing might not resume touring,  Wishbone Ash founder member Martin Turner being a case in point.

At the same place where in 2005 he launched the current phase of his career (and newly a Football League venue!) it was a relief to see the 74 year old looking sprightly. Despite, or maybe because of, most of the crowd falling into the triple jabbed category there was a good turnout for his band, all the more healthy considering they had played across South London in Chislehurst the previous night.

MARTIN TURNER- Boom Boom Club, Sutton, 5 November 2021

They opened with a Wishbone classic in ‘The King Will Come’, improvising on the original by taking the pace to a near standstill mid section before a nifty mini bass solo from Martin. However, this was not a night for ‘Argus’,  but instead its 1971 predecessor ‘Pilgrimage’ which was being played in full, in line with the theme of his shows in recent years to focus on a classic album from Wishbone’s heyday. Indeed a very long two years ago at the start of this tour I’d seen it performed at Under the Bridge.

While the band are noted for long instrumental passages,  this album went a stage further with relatively few vocals so is perhaps not the most digestible listen live. They began with the scat singing of ‘Vas Dis’, which Martin revealed he and his brother discovered through their father’s love of jazz, segueing into the lengthy ‘The Pilgrim’, in which their musicianship was as impeccable as normal, notably Tim Brown giving his drumming the required subtlety.

MARTIN TURNER- Boom Boom Club, Sutton, 5 November 2021

Then, moved out of its traditional position as an encore, ‘Jailbait’, featuring guitarists Danny Willson and Misha Nikolic moving in together to pull the right poses to those twin leads, had a slightly bluesy feel stripped of the usual mid-song chatter, though there was still an entertaining call and response section.

It was back to a mellow mood with two more instrumentals in ‘Alone’, those harmony guitars at their finest, and the folky ‘Lullaby’, before ‘Valediction’. Martin seemed a little sniffy about the song but it was hard to see why, as this beautiful song was done justice by Danny and Tim’s vocals, the latter surprising with his command of the higher range, and a tasteful solo from Misha, incidentally one of his relatively few all evening. The rock-a boogie of ‘Where Were You Tomorrow’, a bit shorter than the album version, sent us off to the break on a more up tempo note.

MARTIN TURNER- Boom Boom Club, Sutton, 5 November 2021

In patterned jacket and trousers, and with an enviable head of hair Martin still carries off the rock star look, but is also an amusing raconteur. While even he cannot predict what is going to come into his head at any one moment, it will be delivered with a glint in his eye. It still bemuses me how, despite being the primary vocalist in his time in Wishbone Ash, other band members led the between song chat.

The second set opened with an original band composition in the title track from 2015’s ‘Written In The Stars’- while the rest of the album seems to have quickly been forgotten, this came over as nothing less than vintage Wishbone with three way vocal harmonies and those melodic guitars singing in unison.

MARTIN TURNER- Boom Boom Club, Sutton, 5 November 2021

After again showing their instrumental prowess on ‘FUBB’ came the surprise of the night in ‘Sorrel’, the folky harmony guitars an appetiser for the next leg of the tour when Wishbone Four gets the treatment. Martin’s introduction that it was a meditation on the death of a house plant showed that songwriters took inspiration from the unlikeliest of sources in those seventies days.

‘Argus’ favourites took a relative back seat this night but ‘Sometime World’ was a glorious exception- as Danny, playing as well as I’ve seen him, matched the remarkable soloing of the original and did it justice. He continued to excel on the solos, plus a share of the vocals, as the gig heated up nicely with the pair of late seventies crowd pleasers in ‘You See Red’ and ‘Living Proof’.

MARTIN TURNER- Boom Boom Club, Sutton, 5 November 2021

‘Doctor’ was superbly aggressive before a closer of ‘Blind Eye’- Martin telling the story of an elderly relative. I was also amused how his facial expressions would sometimes almost exaggeratedly mime lyrics as if he was a children’s entertainer.

There was time for just one encore, a rollicking, if inevitable, ‘Blowin Free’ with the crowd letting themselves go and some fine slide work from Danny. The only downside was Martin signing off his thank yous with his much used ‘Sharon from Essex’ jok e- I was rather hoping he had used the pandemic downtime to develop some new routines.

MARTIN TURNER- Boom Boom Club, Sutton, 5 November 2021

Nevertheless it was great to see him in such fine fettle and the band in such good form doing justice to those Wishbone classics. My overriding impression of his shows is just how much fun they are – a word perhaps not historically associated with the band. They are ones I could recommend to more casual fans as well as Wishbone diehards – those of us who fall into the latter category have a double helping of ‘Four’ and ‘Argus’ to look forward to in early 2022.

Quick plays: BRICK BRISCOE & THE SKINNY, HANNAH JAMES & TOBY KUHN

BRIK BRISCOE & THE SKINNY

BRICK BRISCOE & THE SKINNY www.brickbriscoe.com [Release date 15.10.21]

Brick Briscoe is a composer, filmmaker and producer, who has been working in ‘the biz’ for over thirty years now. Joining Briscoe (who sings and plays guitar) on his latest album are the Skinny, namely drummer Allen Clark III and bassist/backing vocalist Cory Folz.

Musically this is a rock ‘n’ roll trip, with a simple, yet effective, guitar/bass/drums musical backdrop. Cory Folz’s bass playing is a particular highlight. Check out the intros to ‘Henry II’  and ‘Capitol Hill’ for proof.

Recalls early R.E.M. on ‘Up Yours, Up There’ and Green On Red on ‘More Somgs About Boys and Ammo’. The upbeat ‘The Smile On My Face’ has single written all over it, with shades of Talking Heads on this one. Brick Briscoe & the Skinny have the knack of making timeless music that wouldn’t sound out of place on an 80’s US indie band compilation or a modern day themed streaming service playlist.

If you like your music with a rock ‘n’ roll beat meets alt rock then you will find much to enjoy on here. ***

HANNAH JAMES & TOBY KUHN Sleeping Spirals

HANNAH JAMES & TOBY KUHN Sleeping Spirals Jigdoll Records [Release date 19.11.21]

This album brings together for the first time Hannah James (vocals, accordion, sansula, foot percussion), who has worked with the likes of Sam Sweeney, Seasick Steve, Kerfuffle and Maddy Prior, and cellist and composer Toby Kuhn.

They make for a good combination as, bar two traditional songs, Hannah provides all the lyrics and they share the music compositions between them, also composing two songs each.

Hannah James has one of those wonderfully soothing, emotive voices as ‘Too Far For You To See’ ably demonstrates. ‘The Faint and Weary Traveller’ has another fine vocal performance, however, it is the way the cello and accordion play off each other that really makes this one of the album highlights.

The instrumental pieces include a relaxing mix of accordion and cello on ‘Shelia’s Tune’, with ‘Vine Dance’ featuring scat-like vocals over a plucked cello (I think?).

Beautifully crafted folk music, perfect for the quieter, reflective moments in your day. ***1/2

Album review: ENUFF Z’NUFF – Hardrock Nite

Frontiers [Release date: 12.11.21]

Enuff Z’Nuff do an album of Fab Four covers, at last. We used to think it was a given, but it never happened. There’s distance now, and with that comes perspective.

Arguably, only Wilson Pickett (Hey Jude), Joe Cocker (With A Little Help…) and David Bowie (Across the Universe) could claim to have improved on the Beatles’ originals.

With Rock Nite, EZN get 10 shots. And to their credit they’ve chosen a bunch of big hitters. None of this picking “obscure” titles that it’s hard to compare.

Chip Z’Nuff’s recruitment of Tony Fennell, ex Ultravox, and Tory Stoffregen, ex Bulletboys in 2015 was an astute move, beefing up his own band’s solid reputation by adding proven musicians of considerable talent and experience.

And so there’s a maturity here, yet the songs are alive with the excitement you’d expect from a younger band. And no way could it be called a pop album. With few exceptions, this is a muscled up heavy rock album to its core.

Many of the tracks – especially the real standouts – seem as if they are performed against a massive backdrop of constant harmonic noise and full on rock’n'roll choirs. It takes you (pleasantly) by surprise. The musical theatre of ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ and the classically confessional ‘Cold Turkey’ are both translated into epic guitar rock, and both are given a thumping percussive heartbeat.

You might argue that the emotional undercurrents in the originals – one light, one dark – have been lost, but these covers are not intended to be pastiches or simple homage. The arrangements and the production are electric and electrifying, everything’s been amped up, taking full advantage of 21st century studio technology, powerfully conveying the majesty of the originals, with EZN’s signature at the bottom of the page.

The transformation of ‘Eleanor Rigby’s baroque pop into glammy heavy rock laced with faux strings, visible through a massive helter skelter of scuzzy guitars, could just about make it the album’s highlight. That said, the band’s relatively restrained treament of ‘Live And Let Die’ is a delight, as is a pretty faithful interpretation of ‘Dear Prudence’, right down to its movingly keen sense of melancholy, and transformation, mid flight, into a mock psychedelic masterpiece.

Only ‘Revolution’ and ‘Jet’ seem to lack the same energy, but it’s all relative.

Roll on Volume 2. ****

Album review: JOE TILSTON – Tightrope

JOE TILSTON - Tightrope

Bandcamp [Release date 08.11.21]

Joe Tilston is the son of Steve Tilston and Maggie Boyle, who along with his sister Martha Tilston, was brought up in and around the English folk scene. He is the bass player in ska/punk band Random Hand. Joining him on this, his second solo outing, are Luke Antonik-Yates (electric guitar, violin), Tia Kalmaru (vocals, backing vocals, flute), Joe Dinsdale (bass), Andy Hawkins (piano), Simon Dobson (trumpet) and Sean Howe (drums).

‘Armistice Day’ reflects on a soldier’s recollections, where the trumpet adds a military, yet at the same time, mournful air. ‘Evergreen’ is a gentle love song for his wife, whilst at the other end of the scale ‘Flowers’ with its lively beat taps into his punk roots. A single if ever there was one.

Tia Kalmaru is the perfect vocal partner on ‘A Love Song To Late’ and ‘To Continue Press Start’. The harmonies she provides on ‘To Continue Press Start’ are simply sublime. ‘Mirror Mirror’ channels a Levellers vibe, with the vocals and violin a good counterpart. Joe Tilston straddles the folk and alt rock genres with ease, a talented artist of that there is no doubt.

Joe Tilston may be a new name to some, although hopefully this album will see his talent get a wider audience. Impressive tunes, lyrics and a vocal that draws the listener in. ***1/2

EP review: LITTLE LORE

LITTLE LORE

www.littlelore.uk [Release date 03.12.21]

Little Lore is the new alter-ego and debut solo EP from Indie-Americana singer-storyteller, Tricia Duffy. Tricia rapidly caught the attention of the Americana world as one half of the duo Duffy & Bird, with their 2019 release enjoyed by fellow GRTR! scribe Pete Whalley. Now we have this six song EP from Little Lore aided by producer and multi-instrumentalist, Oli Deakin, with drummer Morgan Karabel playing on all but one song.

Little Lore: “It actually felt like a natural progression to start working on solo project, I am immensely proud of everything we achieved with Duffy & Bird but my confidence as a writer has definitely grown and I felt ready to take more creative control over this record.”

‘Hyacinth’ is a sure fire airplay/playlist choice being a jaunty piece of Americana. Apparently the lyrics has references to an 80’s sitcom older readers may remember! ‘Skin In The Game’ cleverly mixes Americana with an indie feel and again the song shows what a fine vocal Little Lore possesses.

‘Sleep Again’ is another timely reminder of the effects of climate change, subtly done though with a gentle melody and lyrics that don’t preach, instead have you thinking. ‘Orbit’ takes a more traditional country love song route, with more stellar instrumental backing from Oli Deakin.

Little Lore has laid down a convincing set of songs as she sets out on her solo journey. More country/Americana in overall sound than the folk leanings of Duffy & Bird but still worthy of your listening time and attention. ***1/2

Gig review: MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP – Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 31 October 2021

MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 31 October 2021

For many years it seems I was fated never to experience one of my teenage guitar heroes Michael Schenker, at his finest. My only experiences of him in the last millennium were the McAuley Schenker Group’s short support slot to Whitesnake, witnessed from the back of Wembley Arena, then a brief appearance reunited with the reformed UFO where he bizarrely dyed his hair black. His final tour with UFO fell apart before it reached London and he resumed a chequered solo career.

Fortunately after hitting rock bottom (pun intended), for well over a decade now  the mercurial German axeman has regained his mojo and more, the Michael Schenker Fest gigs with a revolving cast of singers from his past being particularly memorable in recent years. Back under the Michael Schenker Group moniker,  and with a single vocalist in the omnipresent Ronnie Romero,  I was eagerly awaiting this thrice postponed show, billed as his 50th anniversary tour, as indeed was a healthy crowd at Shepherds Bush Empire.

Doro

First up with a ridiculously early 630pm start was a 45 minute support set from another German metal legend in  Doro- who ironically I saw for the first and only time when Warlock supported Dio in December 1987, the exact month I first saw Schenker. However, the powerhouse blonde singer had changed next to nothing in that time and, in fairness, neither had the musical style.

Songs such as old Warlock favourites ‘Burning The Witches’ and ‘Hellhound’ and solo numbers like ‘Raise Your Fist In The Air’ and ‘Blood Sweat And Rock n Roll’ were basic but enjoyable and delivered by a very solid band.

Doro

The most interesting moment was a cover of ‘Breaking The Law’ where she and one of the two guitarists delivered a slow, quiet first passage before it kicked into something more resembling the original.

Standing on a flight case for extra height, she masterfully whipped up audience participation throughout, none more so than on the highly enjoyable closer, another Warlock oldie in ‘All We Are’. While I would never consider myself a fan, I found myself surprisingly entertained.

MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 31 October 2021

To an intro tape of ‘Highway To Hell’, Michael Schenker took his normal station to the right of the stage from the vantage point of the audience (almost exclusively blokes in their fifties and sixties), dressed as usual in his own unique fashion including a Cossack hat. These days he even handles the majority of the between song chat (which was minimal and avoided the broadsides against brother Rudolf this time), beginning with dedicating the opening instrumental ‘Ascension’ to late drummer Ted McKenna.

Ronnie Romero was then introduced – sporting longer hair and more tattoos than when I last saw him with another guitar great in Ritchie Blackmore – and ‘Cry For The Nations’ was well received with Michael in fine form on his trusty Flying V, but my thoughts on the early songs were that the Chilean’s voice was buried way down low in the mix- better that I suppose than drowning out the man most had come to see.

MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 31 October 2021

Very surprisingly ‘Doctor Doctor’ was tossed into the set just three songs in, perhaps a bit early to get the reception it deserves, but the bulk of the set was drawn fairly evenly from the classic MSG years (plus ‘Lights Out’)  and songs from more recent albums including this year’s ‘Immortal ‘.

Of the former, old favourites were present and correct like ‘Assault Attack’, a rapturously received ‘Armed And Ready’  and ‘Into The Arena’, the instrumental showing off those wonderful solos that are so melodic they are almost hummable.

MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 31 October 2021

However I was even more delighted by a dip into some lesser known favourites- ‘Looking For Love’ climaxing in a wonderful solo where a cascade of notes came tumbling out of Michael’s guitar without ever once  losing control; ‘Red Sky’ was rescued from the awful production of the ‘Built To Destroy’ album and ‘Rock You To The Ground’, which featured another exquisite solo, showed that while he struggled on some of the older material, Ronnie was perhaps best suited to the Graham Bonnet songs.

Among the newer efforts, he shone on the Dio-esque ‘Warrior’ and ‘Sail The Darkness’ and showed that he can sing with restraint on the ballad ‘After The Rain’, while a remake of the Scorpions’  ‘In Search Of The Peace Of Mind’ was an interesting and more progressive moment.

MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 31 October 2021

In contrast ‘Drilled To Kill’ was almost speed metal, though leavened with more fine soloing, then came the Schenker tour de force in ‘Rock Bottom’. Taking his own sweet time in bringing his lengthy solo to its crescendo, it tipped the stopwatch at a marathon 15 minutes.

The band never really left the stage as such, but ‘Shoot Shoot’ did very nicely as an encore. Thrillingly, it was not a one off but only the start of a quintet of prime time UFO classics delivered one after the other- ‘Let It Roll’, with that great solo in the middle that takes the pace right down; ‘Natural Thing’ and ‘Too Hot To Handle’ with second guitarist and keyboard player Steve Mann even given the opportunity to play a few bars of each solo; and finally ‘Only You Can Rock Me’, crowd arms swaying in unison to the instrumental mid-section.

MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 31 October 2021

The guitar solos were authentically delivered, though Ronnie’s vocals failed to cut through convincingly and bore only a passing resemblance to the originals. But those songs represent the soundtrack to my youth and for that reason alone it was a memorable climax, not least with the uncertainty that UFO will ever play these shores again before they finally call time next year.

This show was a touch short of the greatness of the Michael Schenker Fest shows, and I was less than impressed with Ronnie Romero – albeit a view that did not find that many takers as I chatted to people afterwards. With 23 songs in an imaginative and career spanning 2 ¼ hour set,  and playing as well as ever, long may the German guitar genius continue at the top of his game.

Album review: BEAST IN BLACK – Dark Connection

Nuclear Blast [Release date 29.10.21]

Beast In Black, the band that love to mix synths, Europop beats and their love of Anime into the more traditional power metal mix. This is the band’s third album with both of their previous albums  platinum-certified in Finland, and the latter of the two also hitting the top 10 of the German album chart.

There are plenty of upbeat power pop metal moments to be enjoyed on here including ‘Blade Runner’ and the recently released single ‘Hardcore’. ‘Highway To Mars’ possibly gets lost midway through. A tad long methinks. However, ‘One Night In Tokyo’ is one of the most addictive songs you’ll hear this year. Parping synths and a big dance beat make this one a winner, although it may have more traditional metal fans running for the hills! The guitar and synths trade off on this one is superb. Good work Anton Kabanen and Kasperi Heikkinen.

‘To The Last Drop Of Blood’ is more your meat ‘n’ potatoes power metal where the guitar is the star. ‘Moonlight Rendezvous’ straddles both camps, featuring plenty of guitar and synths. Personally I have found the Night Flight Orchestra have been treading water on their past couple of albums, so I am pleased that Beast In Black are leading the pack.

Beast In Black add two covers at the end of the album. The first, a riotous romp through Manowar’s ‘Battle Hymn’ is one you’d expect. However, Michael Jackson’s They Don’t Care About Us’ just shows this band don’t stick to what you’d expect. Yannis Papadopoulos certainly shows his vocal dexterity on this one.

Great fun from start to finish. ****

Album review: FURBABY & THE TIGHT SPACES – S/T

FURBABY & THE TIGHT SPACES

Cargo Records [Release date 15.10.21]

Furbaby & the Tight Spaces was initially a lockdown project for Chicago based guitarist Adam Arling (The Last Vegas), and was originally intended to release a series of singles, as it happens there are eight of these amongst the albums ten tracks.

The idea was brilliant, Arling sent guitar and vocal ideas to friends including past and current members of bands such as Urge Overkill, Warrior Soul and Tyla & Dogs D’Amour. The results speak for themselves, with each artist unaware of the others efforts, the melting pot of sounds and sonic textures is outstanding.

The opening salvo of “Boxed In” and “Moon Boy” pull you in and then you move through the stomping garage rock of “I Can Only Give You Everything”, the swirling psychedelic feel of “Tiny Steps”, “Reaching Out (For Higher Ground)” and “Behind the Door”  (the first two of these kind of remind me of Tom Petty at times, and that is never a bad thing) or the out and out sleaze and  swagger of “Social Distance”.

“Furbaby & the Tight Spaces” isn’t finished with you yet though, the album is completed by some rather stealthy “lighter” tracks in “Waiting”, “Cocoa” and “Next Year”. The kind of songs that you listen to a couple of times and then remain in your head for weeks.

The unusual choice of moniker? Have you ever tried to share a production studio with a cat? The band will be touring the album next year (yes, I know plans may have to change but let’s share the positivity!!) and if the live show is as good as the album, then we are all in for a good time. ****
