Album review: MEMORIA AVENUE – Memoria Avenue

MEMORIA AVENUE - Memoria Avenue

Frontiers [Release date 05.11.21]

Debut album from Memoria Avenue, a collaboration between talented writer/ guitarist/ Producer, Tor Talle, and up and coming vocalist, and fellow Norwegian, Jan Le Brandt.

A polished production and neatly tailored arrangements define the early part of the album. In particular, the inviting hooks and AOR subtleties of ‘Stuck’ and ‘Stranded’ sparkle and shine. There’s not an ounce of fat showing. These tracks are sleek, athletic, and light on their feet, with just enough constructed around each melody to make it work.

As producer, Talle does a persuasive job of matching style with substance, cutting the AOR with pop flavourings to enhance the overall sound.

Then, just as we’re thinking Talle could have made more of LeBrandt’s distinctive AOR vocalising, the album truly comes alive, displaying all the urgency and momentum of great Melodic Rock in all its glorious promise. (The PR comparisons to Work Of Art and Palace now begin to make sense).

‘Waiting Forever’ and ‘Nathalia’ have pulse quickening hooks that moodily defer to melancholy. Both are rich in melodic detail, and each is gilded with a catchy, self contained chorus. This is high calibre stuff.

Then you’re thinking that the balladic ‘Sometimes’ and ‘Someday’, brimful of ringing guitars, seductive tones, and climactic choruses are unarguably the standout tracks, only for that notion to be usurped by closing cuts, ‘High As A Kite’ and ‘Picket Fence’.

The first, an achingly yearning love song with a precise narrative clarity, might remind you of James (Australian Crawl) Reyne’s solo material.

The second, an uplifting paean to the collectivist notion that “United We Stand, Divided We Fall”, is a magnificently apposite album closer. A powerfully delivered rallying call to the human race, hitting all its marks without being ingenuous or overly sentimental.

The future looks good for this duo. ****

Album review: TONY MITCHELL – Hot Endless Summer Nights

TONY MITCHELL – Hot Endless Summer Nights

AOR Heaven [Release date 26.11.21]

Nearly two years on, Tony Mitchell releases his third album as he goes full on 80s AOR. Tony Mitchell spent several months travelling coast to coast taking in the sights, sounds & overall American culture and always said it was a massive influence on his songwriting. As he says: “I wanted to create something a little different from the first two albums, pushing myself further to try & connect with a modern 80s feel. I have tried to blend my normal AOR/melodic rock style with an 80s vibe as I love that era not only for the music but for the movies too. The 80s movies had some killer soundtracks and always had a big influence.”

Oh boy, if you like your 80s AOR/melodic rock with a modern production, you will love this album. Opening with the title track we are off straight away into a big 80s melodic rock sound. ‘Can’t Fight It’ continues the theme and again features a superb guitar solo from Midnite City’s Miles Meakin. Joining Meakin are bassist Nigel Bailey (3 Lions/Dirty White Boyz) and drummer Eddie Antony.

‘Blame It On The Rock ‘n’ Roll’ is an enjoyable OTT romp, from the Def Leppard backing through to the gang choruses. Then just when you’re rocking away he adds in a piano interlude, shades of John Miles and Cats In Space, before we’re back rocking again including another fine guitar solo.

There are ballads too with ‘Strong Enough’ pick of the bunch. Mitchell again uses massed backing vocals to good effect helping to really lift the song to another level.  Mind you, ‘Caught In The Highlights’ isn’t too shabby either and one you could easily imagine gracing an 80s film soundtrack.

The burbling synths that usher in ‘Neon Sky’ sets this one firmly in the 80s. Like a mix of Go West and those long lost Brit 80s melodic rockers Virginia Wolf.

Loving the sax of Daniel Sings on ‘Leave The Word Behind’. One of those songs you can imagine being played loud in the rock clubs back in the day. On ‘Turn Back Time’ you’d be mistaken for thinking Bono was fronting Def Leppard! Another strong song and Tony Mitchell’s vocals fit this one like a glove.

The album ends with the timely ‘Calling Mother Nature’, the heaviest song on the album and the least 80s sounding. Still a damn fine tune though.

Tony Mitchell keeps raising the bar on each subsequent release and he’s set himself a hard challenge to better this album methinks. Still, all the better for us listeners as this is one damn fine listen. ****1/4

Album review: JEFF SCOTT SOTO – The Duets Collection Vol. 1

JEFF SCOTT SOTO – The Duets Collection Vol. 1

Frontiers [Release date 08.10.21]

The pandemic and resulting lockdowns certainly had musicians thinking about ways to carry on with their musical passion. One such artist Jeff Scott Soto wanted to do a retrospective ‘best of’ from the many bands and projects he has been involved in.

The twist here is that Jeff Scot Soto used his extensive contacts book to get fellow singers to duet with him. The best thing as the title suggests this is volume 1 and that means we’ll at least get another one!

The musicians JSS uses are top notch too, namely drummer Edu Cominato, bassist Tony Dickinson, guitarists Jorge Salanmn, Leo Mancini and Howie Simon.

Where to start on this cornucopia of JSS treats? ‘Livin’ The Life’ may not be known to all as it comes from ‘Rock Star’, however his co-vocalist is fellow W.E.T. and Eclipse member Erik Mårtensson. Inglorious’s Nathan James is a perfect choice for JSS’s ‘Believe In Me’, whilst Leo Mancini rips it up on the fretboard.

Bit of a Soul Sirkus reunion on that band’s song ‘Coming Home’ as Deen Castronova joins JSS behind the mic. Symphony X’s Russell Allen is great fun on the Eyes song ‘Callin’ All Girls’, with that man Leo Mancini again lighting up the guitar strings. A really inspired choice and Allen seems to have a whale of a time on this one.

Plenty of other songs will appeal including Eric Martin on ‘Mysterious’, Mats Levén on ‘Again 2 B Found’ and Whitesnake new boy Dino Jelusick on ‘Don’t Let It End’.

There can’t be many fans of melodic hard rock who haven’t come across a Jeff Scott Soto song. This duets collection is a must for casual fans to his music, plus avid fans who get a selection of classics redone with the man himself and a selection of top notch vocalists. ****

EP review: LIBERTY LIES – HaLLoween EP

LIBERTY LIES - Halloween

Liberty Lies – Official Website (libertyliesofficial.com) [Release date 29.10.21]

Liberty Lies formed in 2010 and the current line up consists of vocalist Shaun Richards, guitarist Josh Pritchett, drummer Adam Stevens and bassist Miles Bagshaw. They have been on the road a fair bit, bar the pandemic, and are off again with Scarlett Riot next month (November).

This Halloween themed five song EP includes four covers and a brand new song, ‘Monster’. Liberty Lies are lumped in with the New Wave of Classic Rock bands, yet they have quite a bit of the sound of bands like Shinedown and Stone Broken, plus a bit of grunge. You can certainly hear that on ‘Monster’, which has a riff matching the song’s title.

First up of the covers is ‘Bad Moon Rising’, which features Wolf Jaw frontman Tom Leighton, who sadly passed away in October 2021. Quite poignant listening to the lyrics at times on this Creedance Clearwater Revival classic. Chloe Ozwell guests on Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rhiannnon’, which Liberty Lies suitably rock up.

‘I Put A Spell On You’ possibly the weakest cover, although the guitar and fuzzed piano work well. Fallen State guest on a raucous run through AC/DC’s ‘Highway To Hell’, a suitably rocking end to the EP. You can’t go wrong with a bit of AC/DC and these young whippersnappers certainly add their own twist to it.

A themed EP that you can use on your Halloween playlists this year and in the future. A stop gap release for Liberty Lies, who like many bands during the pandemic, are now getting back onto the road and that will be the main focus for band’s for whom playing live is their lifeblood. ***1/2

Album review: ORANGE GOBLIN – Rough and Ready, Live and Loud, 25 Years of British Rock and Heavy Metal

ORANGE GOBLIN - Rough and Ready, Live and Loud, 25 Years of British Rock and Heavy Metal

Dissonance/Cherry Red [Release date: 5.11.21]

Counting back to 1995, Orange Goblin are a ten album band, whose latest live recording was available only as a digital release in 2020, due to the unforseen circumstance we call Covid.

Now it’ll be out in hard copy on 5 Nov (there’ll be fireworks that day etc etc). The album’s title – Rough And Ready, Live And Loud, 25 Years Of British and Heavy Metal – sounds more like a book launch than a CD release. Still, that said, the cliché, “does what it says on the tin” quickly swims into view.

The cover art is in black and white, and that somehow seems appropriate. This band’s Stoner/ Doom / Sludge Rock is a dark, monochrome world, occasionally illuminated by the fiery intensity of an amp blowing riff from guitarist Joe Hoare, or a howling mating call from vocalist, Ben Ward.

This timely release is spliced together from recordings of various live gigs over a 3 year period, 2016-2019. It selectively plunders 7 of the band’s albums. A live ‘best of…’ if you like.

The music press went into ecstasy overdrive when the band released 2012′s Eulogy For The Damned album, after a 5 year shutdown. The brutal, densely constructed, Blue Cheer like ‘The Fog’, and the steamrollering, combative heavy metal of ‘The Filthy And The Few’ are the picks from that album. Done live, they are indeed performance art, illustrating just why the primal thrill of Orange Goblin’s metal thrives on audience response.

The pair of tracks from 1998′s Time Travellers Blues quake with turbulent energy. Hoare’s explosive, bluesy riffs ignite the Sabbathy ‘Shine’, and Ward steps up and into to an outrageously rocking reconstruction of the the album’s title track.

TTB’s original opener, ‘Blue Snow’ is a bonus track here… it didn’t appear on the digital release.

The remaining tracks growl and thunder their way through the band’s heavy rock battlefield, knee deep in glaur, showing the occasional flicker of a harder, more dangerous edge.

Performance art indeed, from a band born to perform live. ****

Album review: BURNTFIELD – Impermanence

BURNTFIELD - Impermanence

Progressive Gears [Release date 12.11.21]

Hands up all those feeling reflective and romantic?  This band – a Dutch/Finnish hybrid – will provide your soundtrack.

Skip to ‘Trust In You’ an early single/video to give you an idea of the vibe.  A lovely persistent groove that Level 42 would have been proud of.  But don’t let that put you off.  Opener ‘Empty Dream’ should clinch it.  And if not try ‘Back Again’, with its tasty ‘Kashmir’–esque backbeat.

Elsewhere the trio provide a blend of pop prog with the emphasis on the short and snappy.  There’s no extended workouts – save perhaps for ‘The Light’ and certainly the title track – and, if anything, the album is a tad short.  But it’s certainly a case of less wants more.

‘Something Real’ is another great tune with vocalist/bassist/mainman Juho Myllylä joined by Veera-Selina Lajoma.

This is a fine album for the times, ‘Impermanence’ reflects that we are constantly in a state of flux and even with heartbreak and loss there is usually resolution and rebirth.

Burntfield’s music should appeal to those who enjoy atmsopheric and introspective rock such as Katatonia and Anathema, but it’s all fused with a pop and even AOR sensibility right through to the instrumental closer ‘Everything Will Change’.  This is the band’s second album following the debut ‘Hereafter’ in 2018.

Rousing choruses, melancholy and yearning, this is a compulsive album that will strike a chord with anyone who has loved and lost and loved again. Magnificent *****

Album review: FANS OF THE DARK – Fans Of The Dark

Frontiers [Release date: 05.11.21]

Fans Of The Dark are a new Melodic Rock band formed by songwriter / drummer, Freddie Allen, the driving force behind AOR legends-in-the-making, Houston.

He’s brought in Alex Falk on vocals, with guitarist, Oscar Bromvall and bassist, Robert Majd rounding out the band.

Where Houston recycle the musical arrangements and production tones of the eighties, FOTD take an unusual approach, matching a conventional, beefed up melodic rock sound to lyrics inspired by Hollywood movies. Allen starts classy with The Ghost Of Canterville (based on an Oscar Wilde story) then goes a bit populist thereafter … ‘The Foreigner’, ‘Rear Window’, ‘Zombies’ (the cover art provides the clues).

As a producer, Allen is not in the business of creating sonic images to reflect the story being told in the narrative. The songs, robust and theatrical, brimful of sturdy tunes, are built on fairly simple musical foundations.

This works best on the sleek, clean lines of ‘Escape From Hell’ and ‘The Running Man’, both fast moving melodic rock songs. Falk sounds totally engaged here, his voice oscillating between a sweet tenor and a punchy falsetto, ably capturing the melodies and emotions in Allen’s often bizarre tales.

On the majority of tracks, Blomvall’s guitar and Falk’s theatrical vocals do all the heavy lifting, with the songs striking a balance between rock and show tunes. For Falk, it’s dramatics without the extravagant delivery of a DeYoung or a Meatloaf, for Blomvall it’s a big, forceful guitar sound shorn of the bombast that many OTT rock band axemen go for.

It works a treat on ‘Dial M For Murder’ and ‘Life Kills’, with Blomvall peeling off a series of biting, stinging axe solos, walking hand in hand with Falk’s powerfully melodic vocal crescendos. And even if the payoffs don’t quite fulfill our expectations, we can still enjoy the ride. ***

Album review: MISHRA – Reclaim

MISHRA - Reclaim

Shedbuilt Records [Release date 29.10.21]

Described as a “global folk collective” Mishra brings together banjo player Kate Griffin (The Magpies) and flautist Ford Collier (The Drystones) who fashion a contemporary take on folk fusion.  Together with their cohorts tabla player John Ball (who taught the couple at Sheffield University), double bassist Joss Mann-Hazell and singer/clarinet player Alex Lyon.

The contemporary edge is mostly provided by Griffin’s vocal.  I was reminded throughout of Capercaillie, great trailblazers in terms of folk fusion but with celtic roots.  Whilst much is made of Mishra’s Indian classical influences lovers of Celtic folk fusion will find much to like here.  There are also similarities to early Larkin Poe with their roots and Americana influences.

‘Second Line’ is like the band’s take on ‘La Bamba’ (which originated as a Mexican folk song) evidencing their straight forward infectiousness.  There is no doubting the instrumental prowess on show – on tracks like ‘Reel To Reel’, ‘Reclaim’ and the “bonus” track ‘Burn Jam’.

The band received acclaim for their debut ‘The Loft Tapes’ in 2019 and the newly converted will want to seek that out too.  ****

Album review: MISSISSIPPI MacDONALD – Do Right, Say Right

Another Planet Music [Release date 19.11.21]

Mississippi MacDonald (despite his name!) is a 3-times British Blues Awards nominee, from London, England. He has been playing since he was 11 years old and has travelled on the US Blues trail, meeting the likes of Pinetop Perkins, Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith, Otis Clay and B.B. King.

All bar one song are penned by Mississippi MacDonald, who sings and plays the guitar, and he is joined by Phil Dearing (The Gillies, The Noun) on keyboards & guitar, Elliot Boughen (Soul Fixers) on bass, Mark Johnson-Brown on drums, and Lucy Dearing (Cottonmouth Kings) on backing vocals.

As MacDonald wisely says “Blues is often misunderstood. It’s not sad music – there’s great humour, great joy and there’s celebration. When the chips are down and it looks like you can’t go on, there’s always something – there’s always a little light shining through. There’s no heartbreak or bad luck that a horn section, a Hammond Organ and a few Albert King licks can’t cure. And that’s what this record is all about.” Indeed, ‘I Heard It Twice’ is a prime example of that sentiment, with its gusty Hammond, stylish guitar licks and the soulful vocals. Not content with being a top notch blues guitarist he also possess a soothing blues vocal.

The humour side of his music comes through on the chorus of ‘That’s It I Quit’. A clever piece of wordplay which you’ll just have to listen to! Heck, he even gives advice on making a good cup of coffee on the aptly titled ‘If You Want A Good Cup Of Coffee’. Oh, and heed his advice and don’t forget the chocolate digestives!

For the wee small hours ‘Drinker’s Blues’ hits the spot with a soothing piano, a mournful vocal with a little gospel backing and more of that wonderful guitar. The following song ‘Let Me Explore Your Mind’ continues thislaid back sound. I am not sure who plays the horns on this album, but along with the keyboards playing of Phil Dearing, they really add that little bit extra to the album’s overall sound.

The blues is in good hands with Mississippi MacDonald. He has made an album destined for many a blues fans collection. Great fun to listen to and here’ hoping he gets out on the road to play these songs soon, as the blues is music made for the live arena. ****

EP review: AMY THATCHER – Let What’s In, Out

AMY THATCHER – Let What’s In, Out

Website [Release date 05.11.21]

Amy Thatcher is a professional accordionist based in the North East of England. She has built up a reputation as one of the UK’s leading folk accordionists, both as a performer and composer, working with fellow musicians such as Kathryn Tickell, Sting and The Royal Northern Sinfonia, The Shee and Monster Ceilidh Band.

Prior to this EP she released her debut album in 2019 and more music is planned for next year, as well as touring with the Shee.

All four songs on here are written by Amy and each one has its own unique sound & character. ‘Look At You Know’ is an intriguing mix of a piano/synth riff with her accordion playing. ‘Nee Msuette, Pet’ is a jaunty wee number, possibly the most trad folk tune on the EP. ‘The Unheard’ is dedicated to those who don’t endlessly shout or share on social media. Liking the added birds tweeting – perhaps a nod to a popular social platform?

‘Finn’s Reel’ is a corking mix of accordion and modern dance beats, sure to have the traditional folkie spilling their tankard of home brew down their arran sweater of choice, yet for everyone else one of those fine examples of how folk music can fit seamlessly into another musical genre. The only song to feature another musician as Joe Trusswell adds electronics and drums. A real highlight on a very strong set of tunes.

It is easy to see why Amy Thatcher is in such demand as she has a rare talent of taking her accordion playing into musical places it is rarely seen or heard. ****

Album review: MARCO MATTEI – Out Of Control

MARCO MATTEI - Out Of Control

7D Media/Third Star Records [Release date 19.11.21]

There seems to be a trend amongst aspiring proggers to acquire the services of the “prog-whores” who – in the nicest way possible – lend their talents to any number of albums.  In this instance Italian born Marco Mattei has enlisted Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel), Jerry Marotta (Peter Gabriel) and Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson) amongst others.  Strangely, Billy Sherwood is absent.

The problem is that this influx of stellar talent cannot always cover up artistic deficiency.

Mattei offers up his first solo album which is a concept piece: many aspects of our lives are not under our control and we should therefore be more sympathetic to others because they are in a similar position.

I am sure the sentiments are heart-felt but the album fails to convince on a number of levels.

Part of the issue is that you will either like or loathe Mattei’s vocal.  He seems happiest in a semi-folksy fug, but by the closing track you may feel underwhelmed and slightly irritated.  He reminds me of L.Shankar on his most recent solo album but in that example at least some good grooves compensated.

Despite the big beasts on this album, it’s all fairly laid back with no great flashes of instrumentation.  When Mattei does rock it up it remains unconvincing as on ‘Anymore’ and ‘Void’.

The standout may be the instrumental ‘Tomorrow’ which shows a stylistic direction which could have been maintained.  Mattei even reprises this as ‘After Tomorrow’.   A version of Andy Timmons’ ‘Gone’ only serves to reinforce the listener’s incredulity: “Why??”.

And with the countrified nepotism of ‘Lullaby For You’ (Mattei Jr. on intro) we realise that, ultimately,  we are indeed “out of control” but for all the wrong reasons.  **

Album review: ASTRAL DRIVE – Astral Drive (Orange album)

Pete Feenstra chatted to Phil Thornalley for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast Sunday 31 October 2021.

ASTRAL DRIVE – Astral Drive

Lojinx [Release date 24.09.21]

‘Astral Drive’ is the musical vehicle for producer, singer songwriter and multi instrumentalist Phil Thornalley.

The ‘Astral Drive’ album is also helpfully colour coded ‘orange’  (Weezer style) to distinguish it from the previous similarly titled release which was a Todd Rundgren homage.

The 11 songs here explore uplifting psychedelic tinged pop, soul and rock with beguiling piano chord voicing, lilting melodies, subtle vocal harmonies and songs that frequently evoke their title.

It’s an album routed in the 70’s – think Rundgren, Wings and 10cc –  while on the opening brace of tracks he leapfrogs into the late 90’s alt-pop rock world of Weezer and The New Radicals.

‘Orange’ feels as  if Thornalley is taking the librating step of making his own music without the constraints of someone else’s musical vision.

An when he does step outside of his own self penned efforts, on the Bo Hewerdine co-write ‘Star Gazing’, it’s a wonderful  exercise in songcraft which explores the ephemeral nature of fame.  It’s still partly influenced by Rungren, but perfectly fits the album’s sequencing.

For those familiar with Thornalley’s musical history (The Thompson Twins, Duran Duran, Prefab Sprout, The Psychedelic Furs, XTC, The Cure, Bryan Adams and even Natalie Imbruglia etc) this album makes perfect sense as it pushes his creativity into new areas.

He’s influenced by the 70’s and was schooled in the 80’s electro pop era, before enjoying international success as a producer songwriter in the 90’s.

He knows the value of a succinct pop song with a catchy hook. As a result, ‘Orange’ is a creative tour de force with enough originality and diversity not to be be locked into a particular time, place or genre.

It’s an album that gives full rein to Thornalley’s pop sensibilities. There’s plenty of feel, lyrical substance, deft harmonies and vibrant hooks, all subtly honed by his own production skills which lead him to a layered, but organic sound.

The opening ‘I Can Dream’ takes us back (literally) to the days of a stylus hitting vinyl and features an exclamatory mission statement in final chorus:  “I can dream, when the whole world makes me scream. I can be whatever I wanna be, See the heaven that I wanna see, No I’ll never let them get to me, Coz I can dream.”

It’s a song that owes much to the alt-pop and rock feel of The New Radicals and Weezer.

The following ‘Waterfall’ stays in the same era and benefits from a joyous chorus, as he takes us on a free flowing journey full of catchy songs, evocative lyrics and glistening harmonies.

He’s at his best on the more considered ‘Water Lilies’.  The album’s lead single, it opens with a slightly misleading celebratory ‘whoo’, because it’s actually a subtly paced pop ballad full of intricate instrumentation, angelic harmonies and an uplifting chorus.

It’s also full of colourful lyrics and poetic metaphors:  “Do you what love is? It’s never ending. Like the giant canvases of water lilies. Like the tears of love in the eyes of the painter painting, do you know what my love is?”

Cleary Thornalley also knows the value of the album’s overarching aesthetic and feel.  This ranges from the coloured art work through to his use of tone and sonic clarity. The latter sits remarkably well with a psychedelic hue that infuses a coherent journey that leads us to a closing brace of his major influences.

He positively revels in the harmony heavy retread of the Nazz’s ‘Open My Eyes’, as he amplifies a Rundgren style buzz guitar, booming temple blocks, psychedelic fazing and even a subliminal ‘Tequila’ riff.

Then there’s the Hendrix into Prince influenced ‘Wish You Well’ ‘which gives full vent to his production skills and beautifully resolves all that has gone before it.

The languid post-psychedelic feel and hypnotic chorus suggests a job well done, almost as if he’s tempted to use the final track to indulge himself.

In fact the only over indulgence to be found on this album is on the Todd and 10cc influenced ‘One Big Love’. The repeated choral led chorus sounds like an overbearing mantra. It has a lush sonic quality which reminds me of Brian Wilson, though it’s at the expense of the song itself.

For the most part, he explores tight song structures and sonic clarity within disciplined songcraft and a meticulous production.

He counterweights ‘One Big Love’ with the whipcracking snare intro to ‘For The Dreamers’, a song on which the three salient elements could be autobiographical: “This ones for the dreamers, the optimists and schemers.”

He then heads into Weezer territory again on the chorus, tempered by a Wings guitar motif on an incredibly catchy song that appears to adhere to the dictum, if you aren’t snapping your fingers or moving your ass by the 30 second mark, you’ve failed.

In contrast he’s almost pensive on ‘Born To Fail’, another Rundgren style piece with a subtle rhythm track and plenty of harmonic colour.

And as if to amplify the roller coaster nature of the album ‘Summer’s Here’ reaches for new heights, as he pours every aspect of his musical ability and vocals into evoking the feel good vibe of the song title.

It all leads to the immortal opening line: “I don’t know why I’m a genius, I just know I am. ‘Cos right now I could solve the world’s problems, with just a wave of my hand.”

Had he opened the album with this line you would laugh at the tongue in cheek conceit, but as the song builds from an opening electro squall via a majestic  booming chorus into the final Theramin outro, the odds are you will be hooked: “Because summer’s here, do u feel good? I feel good.”

And feeling good is exactly what this album is all about, as track by track Thornalley fills his canvas with what Bowie so memorably called ‘Sound and Vision.’ Absolutely superb!   ****½

Album review: ORGAN FAIRCHILD – Brewed In Buffalo

ORGAN FAIRCHILD - Brewed In Buffalo

Organ Fairchild Records [Release date 15.09.21]

Here at GRTR! Towers we are privileged to receive any number of albums from aspiring or jobbing musicians, some obviously hitting the mark more than others.  Occasionally a real gem emerges and in Organ Fairchild we have a throwback to the gritty soul jazz infused combos of the sixties.  Think prime time Jack McDuff (whose band included a young George Benson), Jimmy McGriff, Booker T and even Grant Green.

The band have topped the 2021 March Madness competition in their native New York and carved out a well-earned local reputation for their jam-based grooves.

Guitarist Dave Ruch infuses a degree of jazz/rock into the proceedings but it perfectly complements Joe Bellanti’s keyboards and Corey Kertzie’s drums.  Well evidenced on tracks like opener ‘Amateur Night At The Apollo’, ‘Huh’ and ‘Get The Scotch Out’.

This is the sort of stuff that would go down well in a low ceiling emporia whilst supping craft beer into the early hours (maybe the Low Bridge Ale donated for the album cover).  Tasty. ****

Gig review: REBECCA DOWNES – 100 Club, London, 19 October 2021

REBECCA DOWNES- 100 Club, London, 19 October 2021

Just before the pandemic struck, one of the artists I was looking forward to seeing more of was Rebecca Downes, a very enjoyable support slot to Brian Downey’s Live and Dangerous at the Underworld proof that she was successfully diversifying from a purely blues pigeonhole into the rock mainstream.

It took longer than planned,  but after festival and support appearances, this was my first chance to see her band headline, on this delayed show which was part of the 100 Club’s prestigious Tuesday night blues club.

The 251s -100 Club, London, 19 October 2021

It was as diverse a three band bill as you could assemble, beginning with The 251’s, an Essex based band of mature years playing a mix of swing, jazz and blues, complete with an upright bass player in Cliff Macdonald. Singer Steve Tolton also played some enjoyable blues harp and handed over vocals to drummer Roy Webber for a couple of songs.

While not really my musical bag, they made for pleasant listening, especially when they gradually rocked  up a bit in Chicago blues style for the closing couple of songs.

The Mojo Preachers -100 Club, London, 19 October 2021

Though nominally on a blues bill The Mojo Preachers threw a melange of some very different musical influences into the pot. ‘Tattooed Heart’ featured some wonderfully melodic guitar work from Andy Walker, then a cover of ‘White Rabbit’ confirmed the initial comparisons I was forming in my mind between singer Sophie Lindsay and Grace Slick. She did though seem to be struggling, as we all were, with the heat, and some sound problems rather distracted them.

The varied keyboard and synthesiser work of Carl Van Selman  even gave some songs the air of vintage seventies funk or jazz rock while ‘Clouds Rain’ (I think- one gripe was them not introducing the songs as part of a rather distant approach to audience engagement) featured a great battle between keyboard and guitar,  while on a closing cover of ‘I Put a spell on You’, Sophie sank dramatically to her knees. They really grew on me as the set progressed and now I know what to expect would be intrigued to see them again.

REBECCA DOWNES- 100 Club, London, 19 October 2021

Rebecca Downes was, by contrast, as no nonsense as her earthy Black Country accent and blonde crop as she opened with a trio of numbers from her most recent and rockiest album yet,  ‘More Sinner Than Saint’ in the hard hitting ‘Take Me Higher’ and ‘Wave Them Goodbye’, then the more involved title track featuring some great keyboard and guitar interplay between Nigel Darvill and Steve Birkett. Surprisingly she debuted a new song ‘Lights Went Out’,  one of a few where the latter added the odd gritty vocal counterpoint.

That unmistakable drum intro, in the hands of Neil Ablard, heralded ‘Rock Qnd Roll’, a risky choice of cover not least because of its ubiquity, but Rebecca’s voice lost nothing in comparison with fellow Black Countryman Robert Plant – and this despite her admitting she had a cold, which I hadn’t noticed. Bassist Vince Yarrington also shone on the song before the band successfully turned their hand  to something completely different with a jazzy workout on ‘Fever In The Night’.

REBECCA DOWNES- 100 Club, London, 19 October 2021

She played a further series of as yet unreleased songs, all of which rocked  - ‘This Is How it Feels’,  apparently written about lockdown, ‘Rattle My Cage’ which reminded me strongly of ‘Crossroads’ and ‘Hold On’, in between Steve replicating the solos played by Tony Clarkin on record on the dreamy ‘Breathe Out’.

Sporting that other West Midlands cultural icon, a ‘peaky blinders’ cap, her long-time guitarist and songwriting partner played an admirably unflashy role, but had a marvellously soulful tone to his guitar work throughout.

REBECCA DOWNES- 100 Club, London, 19 October 2021

Her best known songs, coming one after the other,  illustrated her musical journey – ‘Hurt’ an out and out rocker that was playlisted on Planet Rock, then the winding, soulful ‘Sailing On A Pool of Tears’ which had attracted Paul Jones’ attention on Radio 2.

There was a second classic rock cover in Free’s ‘Little Bit of Love – ironically which I’d seen covered by Robert Hart and Dave Colwell  on my last gig only days earlier! Unfortunately the constraints of a three band bill eventually took their toll, as what I thought was an unnecessarily tight curfew was sharply imposed.

REBECCA DOWNES- 100 Club, London, 19 October 2021

So with four of the 17 songs on the setlist left in theory she only played one, but it was a goodie in ‘Believe’, a real grower with the band jamming out and Steve’s guitar and Nigel’s organ duking it out.

Despite a disappointing turnout, not least when the entourage of the support bands left, this was more than worth the long wait and showed her continuing development down a rockier direction. With a new album on the horizon expect this talented artist and her very able band to have a higher profile over the next year or so.

Album review: NAKED RAYGUN – Reissues

naked raygun reissues

Audio Platter / Plastic Head

Chicago punk band Naked Raygun formed in 1980 and their style strongly dipped into post punk and hardcore. They have been an influence on the likes of Dave Grohl and Blink192, and they have toured with The Offspring, Stiff Little Fingers and Bad Religion. Singles, EPs and compilation appearances, the Totally ….. five CD set combines their first five albums, all remastered.

They’re not a band you hear much of so this set is a great introduction.

The 1985 debut, Throb Throb, is largely a tidy affair of classic post hardcore with a brutal yet well organised guitar and exploratory lyrics. Short punchy songs. Opener Rat Patrol is pure mosh-pit and crowd surfing material. Then Surf Combat, energetic and raw, the guitar in bursts over a neat drum and bass rhythm. The only track that ventures into chaos is the 6 minute almost progressive Leaches Roller Queen. I Don’t Know is a very solid track that gets the head nodding too.

Second album All Rise, issued the same year, keeps up the intensity but there’s a new strength to the song writing; opener Home Of The Brave with its catchy chorus is memorable. Tracks like Knock Me Down nod to the classic US post punk and new wave of the era, but keeping up the crossover guitar and intensity. And tracks like Those Who Move have a guitar line (seemingly) influenced by the NWoBHM. Without making the debut sound sloppy, because it wasn’t, but this a tighter affair, and the album features two bonuses from a previous and long out of print CD reissue.

1988’s Jettison is a wonderful album and a well written (musically and lyrically) album – essential for post hardcore fans. The original album’s running time of 33 minutes – everything short and sweet, and that includes a sound cover of Stiff Little Fingers’ Suspect Device. Four bonus tracks to boot. The drum fills and vocal harmonies over the punk guitar make for a solid album. 1989’s Understand? follows suit, there’s a hint of the Ramones on a track or two, but the structure has become a little more mainstream, and doesn’t grab you like the predecessor. A touch of complacency perhaps?

1990’s Raygun….Naked Raygun, like Understand, is in itself a good album, but misses some of the character of early albums. Maybe the line-up changes had taken the edge off. It’s still supersonic in places and there’s much to love, but the band had changed since their debut. The saxophones on Holding You make for a good rock or post punk track, but it’s just not post hardcore any more.

Overall a fine set, every album has some seriously good moments, and while there are some bonuses, there’s plenty more out there. A nice booklet features lyrics.

Jump to this year and Over The Overlords, the reformed band’s new album. With solid production, you could argue that post hardcore no longer exists, but this is a fine mix of punk and rock, the playing is a lot more structured and polished, as are the backing vocals. Like almost every band with a root or two in punk, mainstream comes with age. That said, there’s still some solid playing and decent songs here. Suicide Bomb has a lot to say, but the changes of mood in the song make it feel a little disjointed even though segments on their own are rather good. The six minute Outro Outre has some heavy keyboards that give a gothic new wave rock feel.

All are well worth a listen, quite enjoyable, but really for fans of the band. ****

Album review: HEARTLAND – Into The Future

HEARTLAND- Into the Future

Escape Music [Release date 15.10.21]

I assumed Chris Ousey had kicked the long career of Heartland on the head with their last album of new material coming back in 2007.

However, after his time with Snakecharmer and also fronting Kingdom of Madness for a while, he has resurrected the name. There is no sign of long time collaborator Steve Morris but more than ample consolation comes in the shape of Mike Slamer,  the former City Boy, Streets and Steelhouse Lane guitarist who for many fans whose playing and arranging skills are spoken of in hushed tones in the melodic rock world. He also worked with the singer on his debut solo album ‘Rhyme and Reason’ which was my favourite album of 2011.

He co-produces, mixes and is one of two guitarists alongside Jaded Heart’s Barish Kepic. Is it really Heartland though, you may ask? Well Chris Ousey’s distinctive voice always gave them their trademark sound, and he is sounding as good as ever.

Opener ‘A Foreign Land’ is outstanding, intelligently arranged, boasting bubbly synths similar to those heard earlier in the year from label mates Touch and a Magnum feel to the chorus. Indeed it was hearing this song on ARFM radio that made me do a swift volte face and volunteer for reviewing duties.

‘Caught Up’ has a little tougher feel and reminded me vocally of Mr Big while ‘A Living Thing’ is a slow burning ballad with prominent keyboards. ‘Giving It All Away’ has the AOR fan’s delight of a guitar riff and stabbing keyboards playing off each other.

However a trio of mid-album songs in ‘Dangerous Game’, with some muscular sounding keys, ‘Climbing Your Wall’ and ‘Mouth to Mouth’ , with a big riff and the Hammond organ adding colour, are not bad, but a little repetitive and lacking inspiration.

Fortunately ‘Not Guilty’ is better,  building momentum during the verses and livelier and more upbeat, then fast paced, vintage Purple-ish  ‘Bolt from the Blue’ offers something different.

‘White Lies’ returns to more conventional AOR with Ged Rylands’ keyboards prominent , and ‘Working For the Man’ is decently catchy but ‘When the Band Plays’ ends the album in average fashion.

This is a quality piece of work, and the productions and arrangements cannot be faulted. However the songwriting means it falls just short of the classic it promised to be.  ****

Book review: ERUPTION – CONVERSATIONS WITH EDDIE VAN HALEN by Brad Tolinski and Chris Gill

ERUPTION- CONVERSATIONS WITH EDDIE VAN HALEN by Brad Tolinski and Chris Gill

Hachette Publishing [Publication date 28.10.21]

When Eddie Van Halen lost his prolonged struggles with cancer last autumn the rock world mourned – the number of Facebook friends who put his ‘Frankenstein’ guitar patterned design as their cover photo in memoriam being an indicator of that. There will be probably be lots of retrospectives over the coming years, but Brad Tolinski and Chris Gill have the advantage of having visited his 5150 studios many times to interview him over the years.

The format of the book is to have chapters in two parts – first a conventional historical narrative, in chronological order going back to his family’s arrival in California from the Netherlands, then a reproduction of a contemporary interview (though in rather slack manner these are not sourced).

The biography sections are very well written, but if anything they do an overly thorough job as the interviews then repeat many of the same points.  The balance does not seem quite right, given that the book’s selling point is the interviews with him.

However as guitar journalists, he seems to open up to them more than with a showbiz writer or even mainstream rock critic, and is consistently frank and engaging, the quality of his insights only suffering when he was newly out of therapy and quoting a lot of the psychobabble that goes with that trade.

If you enjoy chat of the relative merits of different humbucker pickups this is the book for you and dotted around the book are illustrated descriptions of some of his favourite guitars, called ‘Eddie’s Oddities’.

The text is also broken up with interviews, some historic and some post the great man’s death including contributions from son Wolfie, Michael Anthony and Gary Cherone, plus his guitar playing peers with the most interesting insights from one of the many of the new generation who followed in his wake in Steve Vai, on playing EVH’s guitar parts when in David Lee Roth’s band.

They successfully bring out both the artistic and scientific sides of his undoubted genius, from finding that self-exploration rather than lessons was the way to learn an instrument; to his never ending quest for new sounds and sonic perfection.

They also focus on highs and lows and there is an interesting account of quite how the failure of Van Halen 3 sent him into a professional and personal tailspin for some years. Interestingly the one era that is relatively glossed over is the platinum selling, arena touring early years with Sammy Hagar in tow.

Poignantly the last interviews before his illnesses progressed showed him happy contented, reunited with David Lee Roth and with son as well as brother in the band.

Part conventional biography, part oral history, despite being oddly structured in places, the book crams in a huge amount of information to provide casual fans and devotees with a thorough insight into a man who revolutionised guitar playing.  ****

Album review: ECLIPSE – Wired

ECLIPSE- Wired

Frontiers Records [Release date 08.10.21]

Eclipse have been on one the hottest streaks in melodic rock of recent years- even last year’s stop-gap live album ‘Viva la Victouria’ being a reminder of quite how many anthems they have written. And with singer Erik Martensson having already written the bulk of the W.E.T. album which is an early contender for album of the year, expectations are high.

Previous albums over their now 20 year career have shown progression from one to the next. However they have now settled on a winning formula with the direction on ‘Wired’ very similar to its predecessor ‘Paradigm’, and indeed the W.E.T. album.

The sound has been honed to the extent that while still rocking hard, instrumentation is kept relatively simple and solos to the minimum, so songs are rarely given pace to develop before a big chorus takes over. The production has a modern feel and the guitar sound is razor sharp.

However opener ‘Roses On Your Grave’ is a massive disappointment- the hook below their usual melodic quality and Erik’s voice sounding rather harsh.

Fortunately things pick up with ‘Dying Breed’ before ‘Saturday Night (Hallelujah)’, even though somewhat similar in style to its predecessor,  raises the bar for Eclipse anthems even  higher – the ‘hallelujah for the weekend’ chant in the verse would be  strong enough as the main hook for any other song, even before a main chorus worthy of fellow countrymen H.E.A.T.   If they still existed as I knew and loved them, this good time anthem would be packing out rock clubs.

‘Run For Cover’ touches on the celtic-themed guitars that have characterised their work with a furious solo late on as Magnus Henriksson is belatedly let off the leash while ‘Carved In Stone’ is more considered with a lengthy acoustic intro of over two minutes before bursting into life in a second phase, with a touch of Shinedown or Daughtry. ‘Poison In My Heart’ follows a similar structure.

‘Twilight’ harks back to their heavier ‘Bleed And Scream’ era with some power metal style ‘who-oahs’ and a clever insertion of Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’ (or Rainbow’s Difficult to Cure’)  in the guitar melody.  Yet while ‘Bite The Bullet’ also relies on a metallic riff, the pace is taken down in unusual fashion mid-section with some very twangy guitar playing over a sparse drumbeat.

‘Didn’t Come To Lose’ has celtic themed hooks and a chanted chorus and ‘Things We Love’ even more so with ousting guitars like a more metalised Big Country. Final track ‘Dead Inside’ is not one of the strongest but explores different sounds.

The critical will withhold full marks as the band are just starting to retread past glories – but there is no doubt that after some initial disappointment this is a very good album with Mr Martensson’s Midas touch showing no sign of ending.  ****1/4

Review by Andy Nathan

Guitarist Magnus Henriksson answered a few questions about the new album and future touring plans…

Congratulations on your latest album ‘Wired’ which has made the top 3 in Sweden and the top 30 in Germany. How does the band manage to keep themselves in the limelight, especially given the enforced months of the road?

Thanks!

We’ve been working hard at keep writing songs and staying active at social medias. Besides that we released a live dvd/Bluray and a cover song. All this to not lose momentum during this long break.

Was it any different writing and recording ‘Wired’ during the pandemic? Does the band normally record together or is it like many bands now where parts are recorded at various locations and then brought together at the production stage?

We’ve always composed and recorded together in the same room (Erik’s studio that is) so we did the same procedure this time as well. We never had any real lockdown over here so we were free to keep traveling to each other. I wouldn’t say it was any different at all. It was just a bit more depressing given the circumstances.

What was it like coming back to play the band’s first show since the pandemic began? Have you noticed audiences are even more receptive and enjoying the live shows?

It was a weird feeling for sure. You could sense a feeling of happiness and relief in the air. Like people were thinking “Is this really happening”. We were quite nervous as well. Everything felt so new to us. We were just trying to enjoy and be in the moment as much as possible cuz no one knew when next time would be.

You’ve got the Monsters of Rock cruise early next year. How do you approach a setlist for a show like this? Will you be playing multiple sets and/or acoustic shows?

We will likely play 2 full shows electric. Last time we played 1 set at the theater. The other set a couple days later outside at the pool deck. We’ll probably alter the set list for the 2 shows to some extent.

Eclipse celebrates twenty years since the release of your debut album ‘The Truth and a Little More‘. Are there any plans to re-issue this at all?

We’ve said that IF we’re gonna re-release it it’d probably be on a cassette or some other weird format.

We’ve have no interest in releasing it on Spotify and/or CD. We’d rather make good new music instead of promoting a bad album ha ha!

What are you tour plans for 2022? Any chance of a double bill of Eclipse & W.E.T. something I know fans of both bands would love to see.

There will be 1 or 2 tours definately. We just haven’t sorted it out when and where yet. A double bill with another band we would be really cool. We have a few ideas in mind. Let’s see what happens….

Message for your fans…

We WILL meet next year! It will finally happen and nothing will stop us anymore. Love you!

Magnus

Album review: THE FOREIGN FILMS – Starlight Serenade

Pete Feenstra chatted to Bill Majoros for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast 21 November 2021.

The Foreign Films - Starlight Serenade

Curve Music [Release date 30.07.21]

What’s the significance of a band’s name? In the case of The Foreign Films (aka Canadian singer songwriter Bill Majoros), it’s a clue to the way he wears his musical heart on his sleeve, as he successfully captures the magic and mystery of the foreign film.

The Foreign Films retro tinged narratives and delicate arrangements immerse themselves in a 60’s aesthetic that extends from the art work through Majoros’s poetic lyrics to pop- tinged psychedelia.

His influences span The Beatles and The Zombies, plus occasional Todd Rundgren touches with plenty of Beach Boys harmonies.

‘Starlight Serenade’ has plenty of well thought out songs, shaped by an intuitive musical vision that pays homage to a golden era in which we were all much younger.

It’s an album that builds by degrees and Majoros saves his best for last on ‘Angel In Disguise’,  on which the sumptuous melodic detail neatly rounds off an engaging album.  The track starts off in a syrupy vein, but finds its presence via a Phil Spector meets Roy Wood ‘s Wizzard style wall of sound with a de rigueur retro narrative.

You can imagine that the miniature stories and layered music – ranging from an acoustic sweep to a full blow pop psychedelia – is the result of having started the project during lockdown.

As a result he’s transformed his introspective environment on to a bigger musical canvas filled with musical ideas that are tied into a time when life appeared simpler and things were more optimistic. It all helps to provide the technicolor feel that his uplifting music evokes.

What’s missing here is the kind of killer single which could  draw people’s attention to the album.

For the most part ‘Starlight Serenade’ is built on lingering melodies, glistening harmonies and subtle bv’s which flesh out the story filled narratives. Majoros is no Ray Davies, but he does have ability to pen engaging stories.

He sets out his stall on the opening ‘Fortune Teller (Pretty In the City)’. A gentle, but persistently thumbed bass line levers us into the first of several poppy tunes with double tracked vocals and metaphoric lyrics: “She’s going to California with the sun in her eyes and the moon glow in her heart.”

His lyrical bent is framed by 10cc style ‘oohs and aahs’ as part of a catchy pop song which is concise enough to have made its point by the half way mark, before it’s rescued by a guitar solo.

There’s a beguiling earnestness at work here that suggests he’s reaching for psychedelic pop without the 60’s druggy haze.

The difference between this music and say The Zombies – another clean living group from the 60’s -  is that this album has fleeting moments when the musical colour and narratives resonate, but sometimes an annoying sense of familiarity is more significant than the song itself.

Listen for example,  to the jangly guitars and harmony vocals of ‘Echoes Of  The Heart’ which has echoes of The Hollies, The Byrds and always the early Beatles.  It’s a superbly crafted track that acts as a reminder of a magical era with some outstanding bands, but the song is not quite memorable enough to stand out it its own right as part of the overall retro genre.

Majoros is at his best on the lush layered strings of ‘A Photograph Of You’ another uplifting Beatles influenced piece with more evocative lyrics: “A photograph of you in the summer sun, a photograph of you, when we were young.”

The 60′s pastiche of ‘Many Moons Ago (Starlite Serenade)’, which partly gives the album its title, is a melange of horns, strings and an eerie sounding Mellotron, before a brief staggered Beatles style tempo change. A pregnant pause then ushers in a coda that features featuring a couple of harp sweeps and an uplifting finish.

There’s still time for ‘Rainbow’, which features an intricate “dooh dooh, dooh dooh” line, delicate percussion and some convincing harmony vocals which have a fragility that draws the listener in.

The unashamed hippy idealism of ‘All The Love You Give’ opens with a rolling synths, rumbling bass and harmony vocals over a faux Beatles horn arrangement, as a catchy chorus  sweeps all before it.

And just when you’ve become immersed by Majoros’s 60’s collage, he reaches back to the 50′s for a doowop inflected ‘The Mystery Of Love’, albeit with a Todd Rundgren style arrangement.

By the time of the jaunty ‘Sweet Madeline’ we’re drawn back to colourful lyrics which lead to a significant hook:  “She walks in Spanish gardens sun kissed by the sea, she showed me all her secrets that I longed to see. Sweet Madeline, she could see the state my heart was in.”

In sum, The Foreign Films’ psychedelic pop taps into mid 60′s, pre-rock era era when pop was the gateway to all manner of musical innovation.

‘Starlight Serenade’ buys into the notion of keeping the wonder of music alive. It’s a lofty  ambition that only marginally falls short of its aim. Happily there’s enough retro appeal to attract extant baby boomer pop fans and possibly land Bill Majoros a song in a film, which would almost bring the project full circle.   ***½

Album review: LOVERBOY – Loverboy and Get Lucky (Remasters)

Rock Candy Records [release date 24.09.21]

Selling 6 million between them, Loverboy’s self titled debut (1980) and follow up, Get Lucky (1981), have now had the treatment from Rock Candy Records.
Forty years of remastering evolution has brought us to the point where a very contemporary digital clarity can be achieved.

Just like movies, rock albums are memories – they capture our lives. One listen to an old favourite, and we’re back in that moment. That’s what it’s like here, with these two remasters.

From the hooky rock heights of ‘Lady of the 80s’ to the gleaming pop immediacy of ‘Little Girl’, the debut album, Loverboy, harks back to the sounds you would associate with the early days of the AOR genre.

As with every new beginning, you get a sense of the different musical threads the band were pulling at – New Wave, Arena Rock, Dance Rock – as they created their own material, mining their influences, putting their own indelible mark on the popular music culture of the time.

‘The Kid Is Hot Tonite’ and ‘Turn Me Loose’ troubled the Canadian and US Billboard Singles Charts. It was an auspicious beginning. And this from a band turned down by all the US major labels. ****

A year later they were back in the studio, again with producer, Bruce Fairbairn, and engineer, Bob Rock, recording Get Lucky.
These two studio wizards created a sound that now seems put together frame by frame, like an exquisitely lit movie. It’s an enabling production, allowing the remastering to generate vividly coloured rock from the monochrome originals.

The hits just kept on coming. ‘Working For The Weekend’, hugely popular with blue collar workers; the self deprecatory ‘Lucky Ones’ and the obligatory big ballad ‘When It’s Over’ all cemented the band’s place as the rising stars of Canadian Rock. In itself, ‘Get Lucky’ went on to achieve over 4 million in sales. ***1/2

The band is still touring, still performing live. So, take the chance to see them if you get it. And if the familiar voices are now struggling for traction on the upper slopes of the band’s much-loved melodies, you can always fall back on these remasters. They might remind you why you got into melodic rock in the first place.

Album review: BURNING POINT – Arsonist Of The Soul

AFM Records [Release date: 22.10.21]

Finnish band, Burning Point have never found their way into the vanguard of European Power Metal. To their credit, despite being handicapped by lacklustre albums and personnel changes, they’ve kept moving forward.

Now, five years after their 8th album, ‘The Blaze’, guitarist and mainman Pete Ahonen has brought in talented Italian vocalist, Luca Sturniolo for new release, ‘Arsonist Of The Soul’.

The “rising from the ashes” allusion is not lost on us. We get the message. They’ve remembered that the first brick in the wall is the songwriting. Get that wrong and the whole edifice can easily come tumbling down. Get it right and at minimum you can build a solid, satisfying structure.

The band perform with purpose and pace. The metal has a heartbeat. It’s powerful and it’s exciting. ‘Rules The Universe’ and ‘Hit The Night’ show this best. These two, in common with many tracks here, have a rhythmic pulse, each chorus a glorious Power Metal rush.

On key tracks, ‘Out Of Control’ and ‘Persona Non Grata’, the dynamics are more assured, and only occasionally is the crunch of a chorus undercut by the propulsion of Ahonen’s guitar.

The smouldering ‘Calling’, and the surging ‘Fire With Fire’ make great use of of Sturniolo’s double tracked vocals, burning each anthemic hook into our subconscious like a branding iron. Arguably the album’s standout tracks.

Burning Point are a band who don’t aim to bludgeon you into submission. They make compelling, hard nosed arguments with their alternately brooding and aggressive metal music, and they insist that you listen. Doesn’t work every time, but often enough to win new fans. ***1/2

Rising Stars: FURBABY & THE TIGHT SPACES

Featuring past and current members of bands including The Last Vegas, The Steepwater Band, Urge Overkill, The Cynics, Warrior Soul, Abbarama and Tyla & Dogs D’Amour, Furbaby & the Tight Spaces were dreamed up during 2020 quarantine, their debut album is Out Now

Check out the video for single Social Distance here

We catch up with Adam Arling and Joe Winters for the lowdown…

How did the rather unusual band name come about?

(Adam Arling) Well, the band name, granted rather unusual, came about a few ways; one day, while doing some pandemic yoga, the teacher commented on everyone’s “Furbabies running around”. I’d never heard that word before and loved it. Furry is also an adjective for a fuzzed-out guitar tone, which of course, is cool.

And (because things come in 3s), I was also reading a book at the time, called “Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead” by Olga Tokarczuk (highly recommended), where animals purportedly take revenge on humans in the lead character’s mind. It was like it was meant to be, Furbaby.

The project was originally about connecting with friends and staying creative during the lockdown; who did you reach out to first?

(Adam Arling) Yea, this project was definitely an avenue, an outlet for connection amongst some musician friends when things were looking a little bleak.

The first person I reached out to, probably cause we were collaborating recently, was Dennis Post, Denmark’s guitar wizard. In The Last Vegas, we played with Dennis a few times in Copenhagen at High Voltage and also recently played together here and there with Warrior Soul in Spain and Camden Rocks Fest in the UK.

He’s insanely good, has studio chops, and I was spinning my wheels on a solo section for a tune, “Boxed In”, and knew Dennis could nail this in 2 minutes, and it’d blow my stuff away.

Within an hour, he sent me back a wicked solo, some video clips, and the song just glued together. I thought, man; this could be the pattern here…Then it was like a virtual party, and called up Joe Winters (Steepwater Band), Bryan Wilkinson (The Last Vegas/Black Actress), Calvin Marty, Ivan Tambac, Lucia De Montes, Andrew Giese and cobbled some tracks together. Since then, Joe and I have been having some fun.

Did your cat ever forgive you for turning your apartment into a production studio?

(Adam Arling) No, she’s still pissed off, but that’s a cat for you. Topanga (the Bengal cat) did get a bit of revenge by climbing and shredding the green screen every time we’d try to film video footage. The cat thinks she’s the star, and judging by YouTube views measured against her screen time, apparently, she’s right.

You created eight songs and eight videos which all dropped during the pandemic, can you tell us a bit about the process?

I appreciate this question. Coincidentally my partner (a high school art teacher) repeatedly talks about “the process” of art-making and how it’s really undersold, and artists should communicate it better. Did she put you up to this? Ok, so you asked…

The process for this project started years ago; quick voice recordings of riffs/chord progressions, melodies and what not. I read this Tom Petty biography a few years ago, and he chats about walking through the world with your “antenna” up. Ideas are floating around all the time, and you may be on the bus, in the shower, dreaming, whatever, but when an idea hits you, write it down or record it. Save it for later. This is the most important part.

So lockdown here in the USA presented an opportunity, time, to go through years of saved ideas, some old, some new. I’d scroll through rough ideas, and the first one that hit me, that’s the one. Stop. Focus. I’d open up a recording session, plug in a guitar and map out a song structure on feel. One, maybe two takes. Have some fun with it. Layer a double guitar, stub out a bad solo over the solo sections, hum some gibberish vocal melodies and see how it feels. Then walk away. Leave for the day.

A day or two later, I’d put on some headphones, go for a long walk on the beach and just listen to the idea three times while trying to think of a cool chorus line or cool vocal tag lines with my “antenna up”. Where are the weak spots? Make some mental notes, come back, make some adjustments, mess with it for an hour or two, then walk away for the day. Rinse and repeat this cycle until eventually the song feels rounded out, and the fat has been boiled out. Lean & mean. Nail that sweet spot, for me at least. Just try, and what’s the worst that could happen?

Then at this point, we’d start up a video conversation. My partner and I would pitch wacky ideas. Eventually, we’d agree on something and start filming (mostly along the beach) and in our neighbourhood.

We discovered the wonderful world of green screening, where you can superimpose a person, a cat, or something onto a blank background in video editing. This opened up nasty little rabbit hole of seeing how ridiculous we could make a video, or at least I did. I’d come up with a first edit; my partner would gently rip it to shreds.

Then we’d rinse and repeat this process about 3-5 times. Add in about 40 hours of me cursing at Adobe Premier; there you have it, a video and a single. Now onto the next one. Good enough for the Fur.

Do you feel overthinking songs, music videos etc, sometimes takes the edge off? Has this project changed your approach to making music and art?

(Adam Arling) Another great question. A case could definitely be made that overthinking stuff takes the edge off, but the counter argument is that NOT overthinking allows a half-baked idea to pass through, which just kinda wastes everyone’s time?

This project honestly has been an opportunity to reaffirm an approach to art & music. Re-emphasizing the importance of balance, which easily gets knocked off track living in the USA at times, where everything is designed to move really fast.

This project focuses on treating an idea, a song, a poem, a painting, a conversation, whatever as a delicate creation which gets crushed if you squeeze too hard. But if you don’t squeeze at all, you never get the juice, so yea, how do you get the right amount of pressure to pop out something unexpected, fresh, that you’re satisfied (enough) with? I’d guess that’s what most people are trying to figure out every day of their life, in Chicago, London, Madrid or wherever.

These eight tracks form the bulk of the album release, but can you tell us a bit about the 2 new tracks?

(Joe Winters) ~ The two new tracks sort of came about quickly when Adam sent over a couple of demos that he was excited about, and he wanted to come to my place and track drums ASAP.

I only spent a couple of hours playing them and coming up with ideas, and right away, we were tracking the drum parts. Sometimes, I think you get the most organic version of the song, the quicker you can record it from the time the original idea sparks.

“Moon Boy” came out great and might be one of my favourite songs I have ever played on. Hoping to shoot a video for it very soon too!

The other new track is a fresh take on a great song called “Tiny Steps”, written by Elvis Costello. I sort of reinvented the drums on it, and we enlisted our keyboardist Calvin Marty to sing some really great lead vocals on it too! Would love to get Elvis’s thoughts on our handiwork with his tune!

At what point did you think this has stopped being a lockdown project and started to become a band?

(Joe Winters) ~ For me, it was when we had enough songs, and I said to Adam, “these tunes are great, and I think we should try to release them all as a collective work on vinyl & CD.” He agreed, and once we made the decision to release an album, we sort of had to consider playing live and supporting it, right?

So we started jamming with some of the cats that were involved in the recording process and got offered a pretty sweet gig at a street festival in Chicago over the summer that worked in our schedules, so we were off and running. It’s all been very organic and just seems natural.

Adam and I have been friends for two decades now, and share a lot of the same music interests. For me, it was a no-brainer and has been nothing but a FUN, creative experience!

Now live music is back have you played any shows? Been to any live shows? Or have any UK/European tour dates planned?

(Joe Winters) ~ yep, we have played the one gig that I mentioned above so far, and we are definitely going to play a few more around Chicago this winter and continue to fine-tune the live repertoire.

All the musicians that play live with us have been out playing a few gigs with their other projects, including Adam and I, but it’s still a bit of a slow and safe process when it comes to really getting out and touring.

Speaking of touring, we definitely have our eyes on bringing this band to the UK / Europe next year! We have had a lot of fun touring over there with our respective bands over the years, and we both immediately were on the same page when discussing European touring plans for this album. So with any luck, the Tight Spaces will be playing some shows on that side of the pond in 2022.
